July 2, Meadow Lot

On Sunday, July 2, at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Meadow Lot when we run the Meadow to Green Loop. This course heads to the Trailside Museum before circling around to Michigan Road. From there, take the Green trail, which is a sizeable hill, to some of the smaller, lesser-used trails in the Southern portion of the park. While I have the trail marked to cross Michigan Road and catch the CB trail, I recommend taking the alternative route past the park office, maybe even to the Br trail and return via FH to the Meadow. Options include an additional half mile down LL and up to the Overlook or you can make the run shorter by eliminating the Green trail. Anyone looking to start early can arrive at 5:00 a.m., 6:00 a.m., or 7:00 a.m. for a few extra miles.

UPDATE: if you’re coming for the 5:00 a.m. or 6:00 a.m. run, bring a map. After running the Escarpment trail on Saturday, it’s overly optimistic that I’ll be there before 7:00 on Sunday. Have fun.

On Saturday, Saturday, July 1, I’m planning on running the Escarpment course. Final plans are being set so let me know if you’re interested ››

On Tuesday, July 4, at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Lewisboro Town Park upper lot when we run to Raven Rocks (or as far as you want to go). No maps, no set course. Just trails. And no possibility of getting off-map!

Hope to see you out there this weekend.

On Sunday, June 18, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Michigan Road Lot ready to run the Michigan to Spy Rock 7 Mile Loop, or as I like to call it, The Stairmaster. This course starts up the FH trail and heads over the Magic Stairs before turning south past Castle Rock and up The Stairs to Spy Rock. Early birds can start at 5:00, 6:00, and 7:00 and I suggest making it a speed workout by trying to complete the 5+ mile Red loop on hour intervals. I’ll be out this weekend but will make sure Peeter has some maps on hand, you know, just in case. See the map here ››

On Saturday, June 17, 7:00 a.m., anyone looking for some distance work can meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Meadow Lot. Choose your direction—clockwise or counterclockwise—and run. The full course is just over 12 miles but you can make it longer or shorter as needed. See the map here ››

SUNDAY

On Sunday, June 11, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Meadow Lot and come ready to run the Raven Rocks Course. It’s never too early to start thinking about the fall races and here’s a chance to get an early preview of the Raven Rocks Run. Those wanting to start early—between 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m., let’s do some BR hill repeats from intersections 46 to 5. While not as steep as Blue, it will still give you a workout. At 7:00, we’ll meet back at the Meadow for the full BR loop.

SATURDAY

On Saturday, June 10, at 7:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Michigan Road Lot to run the Michigan to Kimberly Loop. We’ll first check on the campsite from the night run and collect anything left behind before heading out. If you’re looking for a longer run, take the longer way around the Blue trail and add a couple miles easily. If you’re looking for a later start, join the group at 8:00 a.m. at Kimberly Bridge. We should be passing through there about that time.

FRIDAY

On Friday, June 9, at 8:00 p.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, lean-to #5 (at Michigan Road) when we celebrate the next full moon—the Strawberry Moon. We’ll follow a new Sights and Heights course which includes the overlook, Raven Rocks, and the Fire Tower. We’ll leave just before sunset, so bring a headlamp. And after the run, plan to hang out by the fire, maybe bring some snacks, refreshments, etc. Should be fun.

Hope to see you out there this weekend.

There are options for making this shorter and once we’re back together, we’ll head over to Peekskill Coffee House at 101 South Division Street for a cup of joe. The perfect way to end this year.

September 4, Michigan Road Lot

This Sunday, September 4, at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Michigan Road Lot when we run a very special course that we’ve not been on for over three years. I’m not going to bore you with details but I will bring maps. If you have gaiters and/or calf-high socks, I’d suggest you might want those as well—we’re going an an 8-mile adventure. If you want to get an early start, arrive at 7:00 a.m. for a few extra miles.

This Saturday, September 3, at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Meadow Lot. No particular course. No particular distance. No particular pace. Just run.

This Monday, September 5, at 8:30 a.m., meet at Mianus River Gorge for a short 5 mile-ish out-and-back. Or there’s the 7 mile bike, 4 mile run, Church Tavern Biathlon in South Salem at 9:30 a.m.—that’s always a good time.

The six-mile loop will take you to the Trailside Museum, past the wigwam to Michigan Road and then return via Shoolhouse Road. The climb to the Overlook at mile four is tough but the view is well worth it. For those looking for a longer run, follow the dotted line to Kimberly Bridge and up Blue for a total of 8 miles (I know that puts two of the steepest climbs on the same run but I’m game if you are). And anyone interested in getting an early start can arrive at 7:00 a.m. See the map here ››

On Saturday, May 28, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Bennett’s Pond in Ridgefield. I’m planning on running the Ives trail that links Bennett’s Pond to the Redding train station. You can check out my proposed route here ››

On Monday, May 30, there are the South Salem road races which are always fun but if you want to stay on trails, Mianus River Gorge is now open. April 26, Leatherman’s Loop

I look forward to seeing many of you at the Leatherman’s Loop this Sunday. Good luck to you all and we’ll run together next week.

Important notes from the Leatherman’s Loop team

Race organizers Mike Paletta, Tony & Judy Godino, Rob Cummings and the dedicated Leatherman’s Loop volunteers have been working hard to set up this year’s event. All we need is YOU!

Below are some important instructions regarding the Loop. Registration is packed full. We will need your help to ensure that loop day goes smoothly.

Here are some tips that you can incorporate into your plan for the morning and the day:

1.) ARRIVE EARLY! Please plan to arrive at the park before 8:20. Car pool if you can. Traffic will back up considerably at the park entrance as race time approaches. Please be patient. The regular $10 parking fee is incorporated as part of the loop entry fee so entry will go more quickly. It is always wise to arrive earlier than you think you need to in order to make sure you are all set by race start time (9am). This is especially true if it is your first time running the Loop.

2.) DRIVE SLOWLY and CAREFULLY in the Park! Watch the volunteers who are directing the parking. PARK TIGHT! Plan ahead – Car Pool if you can!. For a helpful overview of the race location (parking, start, bib pickup), check the logistics page on the website.

Join us for a special July 4 run at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation when we run a new route—the Meadow to Overlook loop. We’ll start from the Meadow lot and pass the Trailside Museum before heading into the southern portion of the reservation before returning via Schoolhouse Road. At the end of the run, you have the option of cooling off by crossing the stream instead of heading over the bridge. Depending on the heat, it might be a refreshing change.

I hope to see you out there for this special run.

Sunday,  June 30, 8:00 a.m.
This Sunday, meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Meadow Parking Lot when we run one of our all-time favorite courses—the Fire Tower course. This 10k run takes us down the rocky scramble that’s the yellow trail then up the back side of Fire Tower hill before returning back to the meadow. It’s the perfect run to whet your appetite for the Summer Runs Sunday Pot Luck later in the day.

Don’t forget to to RSVP for our Sunday Runs Pot Luck on June 30 at 4:00 at Westmoreland. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone in “real” clothes for a change. The RSVP form lets you know what we need but if you have any questions, you can let me know or contact Annie Bai, our de facto social director (thanks Annie).

Saturday, June 29, 8:00 a.m.
Anyone interested in a Saturday run can meet at the Meadow Parking Lot for the Meadow, Michigan, and Museum loop. It’s hilly, but it’s fun.

Hope to see you out there.
