This Sunday, May 25 at 8:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Trailside Museum for a very special run. Since a number of Sunday runners (I won’t mention names—you know who you are) seem to have difficulty following my maps, this is your chance to make your own. The morning of the run at the museum, I’ll set a destination and even give you a map to get you there (although you can ignore that if you want and take your own route). Your challenge is to get to that destination and back taking any path you choose. The shortest out-and-back will be 5 miles but you can make the run as long as you’d like. This Sunday, it will be impossible to take a wrong turn.
Saturday, May 24, at 8:30 a.m. Meet at the entrance to Mianus River Gorge when the preserve opens at 8:30 and follow the red trail south taking every left. Located on the Bedford/Greenwich border (Google map here) the terrain is similar to Zofnass preserve but shorter and with fewer switchbacks. Bring your own map located here.
This Sunday, May 18 at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Lewisboro Town Park upper parking lot and car-pool to A Mild Sprain 4.25 trail race in Sprain Ridge Park, Yonkers. Race director David Vogel always makes sure this is a fun and challenging event and last year saw a number of our group on the stage for the awards ceremony. Race-day registration is still open although online registration is closed. If you want to car-pool for the race, meet at Lewisboro Town Park UPPER lot at 8:00 a.m. and at the park-and-ride off exit 4 on route 684 at 8:20.
Not planning on doing the race and refuse to cave to peer pressure? Still meet at Lewisboro Town Park Upper lot onSunday at 8:00 a.m. to run the Meadow Northern Loop course but starting from the town park (see map here for access). I suggest running the loop in a counter-clockwise direction and bypassing the Meadow lot on your way to the Trailside Museum. It’s your call but bring your own maps, I’ll be at A Mild Sprain.
Saturday, May 17, 8:00 a.m.
Looking for a Saturday run? I suggest checking out the Outer OS loop from last Sunday at Mountain Lakes Park. Seems everyone had a good time and this will give you a chance to see where you got off-map.
This Sunday, May 11 at 8:00 a.m., meet at Mountain Lakes Park,at the trail head of the white trail to Lookout Point, when we run the Outer OS loop. It’s been a while since we’ve run this as a group but it’s a great course full of rocky slopes and single-track forest trails. The map shows the loop to Hunt Lane and another around Spruce Lake, both of which are optional if you want to shorten the distance. Registration for the Second Annual Sarah Bishop Bushwhack is now open so this is a great chance to check out some of the trails for the race.
Saturday, May 10, 8:00 a.m.
Course check for A Mild Sprain trail race. Meet at Sprain Ridge Park and be ready to run at 8:00 a.m. sharp. Race director David Vogel will lead a check of the course so anyone who wants to can get to see the course before race day which is next Sunday, May 18. Registration for the race is still open and costs $40 (which includes some great swag) so you should—you know—register. If you want to car-pool for the course check, meet at Lewisboro Town Park lower lot at 7:25 a.m. and at the park-and-ride off exit 4 on route 684 at 7:35.
This Sunday, May 4 at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Michigan Road lot when we run a new variation of the Rock Trail Loop. This version starts on the Red/Yellow trail before we catch the RT at intersection 20. You’ll get a chance to run the new trail between 40 and 58 which replaces the “ankle-breaker” trail which is now closed. The RT trail is well marked so follow the signs and you’ll stay on course. The map shows an optional detour to Dancing Rock which would add an extra half mile to bring the total to 7. Plenty of ways to shorten the course as well if you’d like.
Saturday, May 3, 8:00 a.m.
If you’re looking for a run on Saturday, meet at Mountain Lakes Park and run the Outer OS loop. Don’t worry if you miss it though, we’ll be running there soon anyway.
What a great day we had for the Loop this year and although the course was slow and muddy, there were a lot of great performances. Here are some of the times from those on the Sunday Runs list (and a few of their kids). It’s not a complete list so if you want to be included and I’ve left you out, let me know. Congratulations to everyone and especially to Rob Cummings for comeback of the year.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the Leatherman’s Loop this Sunday. Good luck to you all and we’ll run together next week.
Important notes from the Leatherman’s Loop team
Race organizers Mike Paletta, Tony & Judy Godino, Rob Cummings and the dedicated Leatherman’s Loop volunteers have been working hard to set up this year’s event. All we need is YOU!
Below are some important instructions regarding the Loop. Registration is packed full. We will need your help to ensure that loop day goes smoothly.
Here are some tips that you can incorporate into your plan for the morning and the day:
1.) ARRIVE EARLY! Please plan to arrive at the park before 8:20. Car pool if you can. Traffic will back up considerably at the park entrance as race time approaches. Please be patient. The regular $10 parking fee is incorporated as part of the loop entry fee so entry will go more quickly. It is always wise to arrive earlier than you think you need to in order to make sure you are all set by race start time (9am). This is especially true if it is your first time running the Loop.
2.) DRIVE SLOWLY and CAREFULLY in the Park! Watch the volunteers who are directing the parking. PARK TIGHT! Plan ahead – Car Pool if you can!. For a helpful overview of the race location (parking, start, bib pickup), check the logistics page on the website.
This Sunday, April 20 at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Meadow Parking lot when we run a new course that combines some serious hills with some wide-open trails to stretch your legs. The Meadow, Museum, Fire Tower to Michigan run is 6 miles of awesome that will give you a combination of steep slopes and gentle hills (pretty much in that order). There are some unexpected turns on this course so you’ll want to keep a map handy so you’re sure to stay on-course. Sunday, April 20 at 7:00 a.m. For those who want to get an early start on the day, arrive at the Meadow Parking Lot at 7:00 a.m. for the The Meadow, Museum, Fire Tower to Michigan 6-mile run. Same run as above, earlier start time.
This Saturday, April 19 at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Meadow Parking lot for and run one of two options. Option 1: run the The Meadow, Museum, Fire Tower to Michigan course as described above which is 6 miles or if you’re looking for a longer run, try your hand at Eleanor’s Escape but start at the Meadow and follow the BR trail to Kimberly Bridge and return from Michigan Road via FH. That’s about an 8.5 mile loop. Bring your own maps either way.
Next week is the Leatherman’s Loop but we’ll be back the week after that with more great runs.
This Sunday, April 13 at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Meadow Parking lot for the only course check of the Leatherman’s Loop. If you’re running the race this year, this will be the only chance to run the course with the group and a great chance to get out and test the terrain. The water crossings are optional but not the Mud Flats so you might want to bring a second set of shoes to change into. I’m just sayin’.
Saturday, April 12, 12:30 p.m.
On Saturday, there will be a special 5-mile run starting at 12:30 from the Michigan Road Parking Lot going to Raven Rocks, the Leatherman’s Cave, and the Overlook (see the map here). After the run, head over to the opening reception of the Loop Photography Exhibition at the WPA gallery until 4:00, and see a screening of the “25 Years of the Leatherman’s Loop” documentary at 3:00 at the Trailside Museum.
This Sunday, April 6 at 8:00 a.m., meet at the gazebo at Leonard Park in Mt. Kisco (see map) when we tackle some different trails. We’ll start in Leonard park, go through Marsh Sanctuary, Merestead, and Butler Sanctuary. Runners will have a choice of various distances.
5 Mile Run: Take the course through Marsh and Merestead to the Butler loop. 7.7 Mile Run: Follow the Butler loop which adds 2.7 to the run for a total of 7.7 miles. 10 Mile Run: Cross the road to Westmoreland Sanctuary for a short loop. 13.1 Mile Run (approx): Anyone interested in going farther can try the Leonard Park to Westmoreland Greenbelt Half Marathon which adds the perimeter course of Westmoreland.
There you have it— a host of great options through five different parks. Hope to see you out there.
This Sunday, March 30 at 8:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Meadow Parking Lot (rain or shine) when we run the Meadow to Overlook loop. We’ll start from the Meadow lot and pass the Trailside Museum before heading into the southern portion of the reservation and returning via Schoolhouse Road. At about mile four, you might notice a slight incline—that would be to the Overlook where you’ll have a great view (and some serious training for the sand hill of the Leatherman’s Loop). I ran the course earlier this week and the trails are almost completely ice-free. With the rain expected over the next couple of days, I think they’ll be completely clear by Sunday.
Next Sunday we’ll meet at Leonard Park in Mt. Kisco for the Leonard Park to Butler run. I hope to see you out there.
This Sunday, March 23 at 8:00 a.m, meet at the Zofnass Family Preserve on Upper Shad Road in Pound Ridge (see Google Maps) when Tony Godino shows us a new preserve with a network of trails noted for its crags and rock outcrops. Meet at the main entrance and we’ll follow a perimeter loop making, as Tony said, “All right turns except for the left ones.” We’ll make a 6-mile loop counter-clockwise around the preserve but leaving off the orange, western loop. See the map page here. The trails are clearing up and the next couple of days of warm weather should melt even more of the ice. It’s perfect weather for running.
Only five more weeks before the Leatherman’s Loop. Hope to see you out there this Sunday.
The trails have seen a bit of thawing this past week and with temperatures forecast to be in the 40s and 50s the next couple of days, I’m optimistic that the trails will be back to normal soon. That said, don’t hang up the YakTraks or screw shoes just yet. On Sunday, March 16 at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Lewisboro Town Park upper parking lot when we run a 5.3 mile course on some of the same trails you’ll run for the Leatherman’s Loop. About 25{accc40b09832ee94a70b9d38053be2da501a998c4b43b97565b1c370fb270371} of the trails are free of snow and ice already while the rest have been compacted, frozen, and thawed so that shoes with a little grip to them would be a real asset. By Sunday morning, we should have just about every terrain imaginable available—snow, ice, dirt, rock, gravel, mud, and stream (sorry folks, no lava).
For those interested in a longer road run on Saturday, March 15 at 8:00 a.m., meet at Reservoir Road behind the Katonah Art Museum and run the out-and-back course of 4.5, 6.5, or 9 miles.
Hope to see you on Sunday. Six weeks to the Leatherman’s Loop.
With our usual trails in such poor shape, we’re going to switch things up this week with the option of some distance work. On Sunday, March 9 at 8:00 a.m., meet on Reservoir Road in Katonah (behind the Katonah Art Museum, See Google Map) and run 4.5, 6.5, or 9.0 mile out-and-back course to Maple Ave, Jay Street and Upper Hook Road. Your choice of distances but the turnaround at 121 yields a total of 9 miles. With some warmer temps moving in, hopefully we’ll be back on the trails again soon.
Hope to see you on Sunday. Seven weeks to the Leatherman’s Loop.
This Sunday, March 2 at 8:00 a.m, meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Michigan Road Parking lot when we run another double-loop course, this time in the southern part of the park. We’ll enter and make a complete loop on the green trail, returning near our starting point before following yellow for a second, smaller loop. I’ve run these trails this week multiple times and while they’re still uneven, the snow has been well compacted so it’s not such a struggle. If you want a little longer run, you can follow the green trail in the opposite direction for your second loop and finish the run as you started—that should bring the total run to about 6.8 miles. Or if you’re not feelin’ the love, you can continue on Michigan Road and add some distance on the pavement. Your call—lots of options this week. Download a PDF here ››
This Sunday, February 23 at 8:00 a.m, meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Meadow Parking lot when we run a crazy double-loop course in the northern part of the park. The trails are still a challenge but I’ve managed to find a few in the northern part of the Reservation that have seen a fair amount of use so while still hilly, at least you won’t find yourself shin-deep in snow (for the most part). Download a PDF here ››
Still looking for a place to run next week. Stay tuned for details.
With our usual trails in such poor shape, we’re going to switch things up this week. On Sunday, February 16 at 8:00 a.m., meet on Reservoir Road in Katonah (behind the Katonah Art Museum, See Google Map) and run a 6-mile out-and-back course to Maple Ave, Jay Street to Upper Hook Road. Turn around is at 121 for a total of about 6 miles. With luck the roads will be plowed and, while technically not a trail, it should be a nicer run than on the trails this week.
On Sunday, February 9 at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Michigan Road Lot when we run something that looks like the Red Plus Loop. We’ll begin with the Red/Yellow trail and follow Red to Raven Rocks. Since conditions on the trails are rather challenging, you have options for returning via Yellow, Green, Red/Green or completing the entire loop. I was out this morning and can attest that Yellow can be easily run, Red/Green is a challenge, and the LL trail to the Overlook can be described as double black diamond. If you enjoyed last week’s Looper Bowl, you’re going to love this run.
This Sunday, February 2 at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Meadow Parking Lot and rise to the challenge of the Third Annual Looper Bowl. Follow the loop course, water crossings, mud flats, sand hills and all. Relive the excitement of the Leatherman’s Loop but with the possibility of snow. For those wanting to keep their feet dry, there are optional detours to avoid all the water crossings but, sorry, not the mud flats. You’ll probably want to bring an extra pair of shoes to change into after the run—might be a little, er, muddy (unless, of course, it’s frozen over).
Next week we’ll be meeting at the Ward Pound Ridge Trailside Museum.
This Sunday, January 26 at 8:00 a.m, bundle up and meet at the Lewisboro Town Park when we run a classic course to Kimberly Bridge and back via the DH and Br trails. We’ll run the course in a clockwise direction this time and, with the cold weather, the Br trail should be firm (read: frozen solid like a skating rink). Note the dotted line after Kimberly Bridge that seems to go “off-map.” I discovered a spur trail that connects DH and Br which should be passable for those who prefer exploring. The course as marked is 5.25 miles with options for making it shorter. Download a PDF here ››
Next week we’ll meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Meadow Parking Lot when we run the third annual Looper Bowl.
This Sunday, January 19 at 8:00 a.m, meet at Mountain Lakes Park (201 Hawley Road, North Salem, NY) when we try out some new trails that the staff at Mountain Lakes has recently cut in when we run the Outer OS loop. Mark Vincent has found an extension of the OS trail which opens up areas of the park that most of you have never run before. We’ll also pass through the Yurt Village, around Spruce Lake (conditions permitting) and up the Red trail which will be new for most of you. Meet at the trailhead to Lookout Point if the main gate is open.
Next week we’ll meet at a new location when Tony Godino shows us the Zofnass Family Preserve.
This Sunday, January 12 at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Michigan Road lot when we follow a course from Michigan Road to Kimberly Bridge. This time, we’re going to run the course against the arrows, starting on Red-Yellow, going down the Blue slope and passing the Meadow lot before returning to Michigan Road. Make sure you save some energy in reserve for that final climb. PDF of the trail is available here ››
Next week we’ll meet at Mountain Lakes Park for another try of the Outer OS loop that will be new to most of you.
Start the new year off right with this classic run. On Sunday, January 5 at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Ward Pound Ridge reservation Michigan Road Lot when we run Rob’s Recovery Run—six miles of trails in the southern portion of the park that take us past the overlook, Leatherman’s Cave, Bear Rock Petroglyph, and Dancing Rock. Optional out and back to Rob’s Ruin for those who want to add a little more distance.
Next week, we’ll be back at the Michigan Road Lot again but this time we’ll head north to Kimberly Bridge.
January 1, 10:00 a.m.
Looking for a way to start your new year off right? How about a nice 5 or 7-mile trail run? This course is the perfect antidote for that hangover. Breathe in the air, get that heart pounding, and clear your head. Meet at the Lewisboro Town Park upper parking lot on January 1, 10:00 a.m. Oh, and if you’re not up for the full run, there are plenty of options to make it shorter. Visit the map page ››
This Sunday, December 29 at 8:00 a.m, meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Trailside Museum when we run the last run of the year—the Museum, Michigan, Raven and Blue Loop. This course will start us over Fox Hill which is always an eye-opener, then take us to Michigan Road then the Green trail to the southern portion of the park. You’ll get a view from Raven Rocks before entering the “waterfall” section of the RT trail to one of the lowest portions of the park before starting the climb back up. Keep an eye open at intersection 13 because you don’t want to end up at Pell Hill, but follow Blue down the hill and return to the Museum. While it may only be 5.6 miles, this is a fun and challenging run. Download PDF map ››
Saturday, December 28 at 8:00 a.m. Anyone interested in a Saturday run, meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Trailside museum at 8:00 a.m. to run the Museum to Blue Route. I won’t be there but you can run it in either direction—either start going up Fox Hill or finish coming down it. Either way the trails are spectacular right now so this is another chance you have to run with the group. Just bring your own map.
This Sunday, December 22 at 8:00 a.m, meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Meadow Parking lot when we run the Meadow, Michigan, to Museum Loop. We’ll head south from the meadow over Fox Hill to Michigan Road. Depending on the trail conditions, we can decide whether to make the run a 5-mile or 6.15-mile loop. We’re expecting some warmer temperatures before Sunday so we’ll see how much of the snow melts off before Sunday. Download PDF map ››
Thank you so much for making this possible. Eamonn ran tough and brought home a medal for the team. 16th out of 329 runners for all-American status. We could not have done it without your support and great spirit behind him. Thank you so much!
I really appreciate all the donations that you gave and I will do the best that I can for that. I really enjoy running with the group. While I am in Texas I will be thinking of you guys and the training you guys have helped me with by inviting me to the runs on Sunday morning.
— Eamonn Pre Sullivan
The Sunday family,
I have been searching for ways to express my gratitude and appreciation for what you guys have done. You have brought a new appreciation of running and friendship that I never expected. This group is something special, not despite of, but rather because of the different perspectives and personalities of the group.
Seeing how supportive everyone is of each other is the greatest gift of the group. And being a recipient of that support is an honor and humbling at the same time. But it goes beyond the practical support of the donations. Your acceptance and support of Eamonn is simply a joy to see. From the first step, Eamonn was treated as one of the group. He has often commented how much he loves running with the group. One observation he had was how we can bust each other’s chops and no one gets upset or bothered. (F@$& you Mark Vincent). I hope that this note can convey how truly touched and grateful I am. Without the help and powerful spirit of the Sunday Runners, Eamonn’s journey would not have been possible.
I wish I could personally reach out to everyone. With that not being possible, I will simply say, thank you. Thank you for the generosity, the spirit everyone brings, and the wonderment at how so many smart people have so much trouble reading maps.
This Sunday, December 15 at 8:00 a.m, meet at Mountain Lakes Park (201 Hawley Road, North Salem, NY) when we try out some new trails on what I’m calling the Outer OS loop. Mark Vincent has found an extention of the OS trail in the park which opens up areas of the park that we’ve never run before. We’ll also pass through the Yurt Village, around Spruce lake and up the Red trail which will be new for most of you. Meet at the trailhead to Lookout Point and if the snow doesn’t melt by then, be ready for a wintery run.
Saturday, December 14, at 10:00 a.m. For those who are interested in a Saturday run, Tony Godino and Dave Cope will be running the trails of the Westchester Wilderness/Zofnass Family Preserve on the Pound Ridge/Greenwich border on Saturday. Meet at the main entrance on Upper Shad Road a quarter mile from Long Ridge Road (see Google map).
Next week we’ll be back at he Reservation—just not sure where.
This Sunday, December 8 at 8:00 a.m, meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Michigan Road Lot when we run a new course called the Blue Moon Trail. While it’s new to us, this is the revival of a course that Tony and Dave Cope created many years ago (although Dave denies any knowledge of being involved). We now have a map of the course with an optional 3.5 mile loop for those who don’t want to do the full course which involves some bushwhacking below lookout point and an “abandoned” trail west of there. We’ll be running the course against the arrows this time and starting off through the marsh below Michigan Road then climbing up to the Overlook. If nothing else, just show up on Sunday and follow Tony. See map ›› | Download PDF ››
A Special Note from Tony Godino to the Group
Some of you may already know that Eamonn Sullivan has qualified for and will be competing in the USATF Cross Country Junior Olympics in San Antonio Texas on December the 14th. He recently finished 2nd in an association meet qualifier and 5th in the regional qualifier. When I looked at the regional results I couldn’t help but notice that the four boys ahead of him and most of those behind him were all associated with a club while Eamonn ran “unattached”. Let’s fix that and give him (and Gerry) some support. As of today, I have $400 pledged from “anonymous” sources. If some of you would like to contribute it would be wonderful. A personal note of encouragement with your contribution would be extra special. I will be running with the group on the 8th to collect. If you can’t be there on the 8th but would still like to help out just e-mail me at acgodino@verizon.net and I will get back to you with specifics.
Our Sunday Runners outside in the reservation
Push aside all thoughts of procrastination
The camaraderie is great and good times abound
We often get lost, but are somewhere around
If you have been with us there amidst the trees
Consider this your invitation, do come please
On Dec 7th at 6 pm we are heading inside
We’re going to party, come along for the ride
Bring some food, bring some wine
It all sounds fine –maybe sublime
Or bring some beer
And your holiday good cheer.
Bring two or three silly gifts too –
Wrap them please. whoo hoo.
Send us a note so we know you’ll be there,
And what food or drink you will happily share
That would be great
And it’s not too long to wait
We’re ready to CELEBRATE.
* * *
Bring your family and kids and come celebrate the holiday season with the Sunday Runs group. Bring something to nosh and share, $10 to cover costs, and a couple wrapped “silly” gifts that we’ll be opening during the party. Location to be announced soon. RSVP to info@sundayruns and let us know what you’re bringing at PerfectPotluck.com.
We hope to see you there!
Barry Fagan, Karen Haitoff, Eleanor Hershey, Mark Vincent, Lee Willett
This Sunday, December 1 at 8:00 a.m, meet at the Lewisboro Town Park upper parking lot (see map) when we shed some pounds and run a perennial favorite—the Fat Ass Run. Seven miles of trail running is the perfect antidote to the tryptophan-laden butterball from Thanksgiving dinner. The fresh air will wake you up, you’ll feel reinvigorated, plus, as an added bonus, you’ll work up an appetite to help you finish those leftovers still cluttering up your fridge. For those who don’t want to do the full seven miles, a three-mile course is also an option. Now there’s no excuse not to come out. Download PDF map ››
Friday, November 29, 8:30 a.m.
If anyone is interested in a post-Thanksgiving, black Friday run, I’m going to try out the Mianus River Gorge in Bedford. I’ve been told that out and back is no farther than 5 miles but I’ve been wanting to try it out before it closes December 1. I’ll be at the parking lot marked on the map at 8:30 a.m. Directions ›› Downloadable Tail Map ››

On Sunday, November 24 at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Meadow Parking Lot when we run the Meadow to Overlook loop. We’ll start from the Meadow lot and run the course in reverse so we’ll be passing the Trailside Museum near the end of the run. We should have a beautiful view from the Overlook, weather permitting.
Next week we’ll be meeting at the Lewisboro Town Park when we run the Fat Ass Run and let me know if you’re interested in a Friday morning run. It’s always great to get out the day after Thanksgiving.
This Sunday, November 17 at 8:00 a.m., meet at the gazebo at Leonard Park in Mt. Kisco (see map) when we tackle some different trails. We’ll start in Leonard park, go through Marsh Sanctuary, Merestead, and Butler Sanctuary. Runners will have a choice of distances.
Saturday, November 16, 8:00 a.m.
If you’re interested in an additional run this weekend, meet at Mountain Lakes Park (201 Hawley Road, North Salem, NY) at the trailhead to Lookout Point and run the Sarah Bishop Bushwhack course. Instead of starting at the race start, though, we’ll be starting from the Kids’ Start on the map and completing the 10K course from there. Should be a lot of fun. And if you can’t make it in the morning, Mark Vincent will be running the course at 2:30 on Saturday as well so you have another chance for a great run.
There you have it—two days, three runs, and a host of great options through six different parks this weekend. Hope to see you out there.
This Sunday, November 10 at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Michigan Road lot when we follow the Michigan to Kimberly Bridge course. Michigan Road is our traditional starting point for runs in the southern portion of the reservation but this time we’ll run North from the lot to the Meadow, follow some of the Leatherman’s Loop course trail to Kimberly Bridge, then “up” the blue trail and return by way of yellow. There might be a little bit of an incline at mile one and another at mile four so don’t hate your run director—hate the hill. PDF of the trail is available here ››
Next week we’ll change up the scenery a bit and meet at Leonard Park to run the Leonard to Butler course.
This Sunday, November 3 at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Meadow parking lot when we run a new version of an old favorite—the Fire Tower Summit Run. This 6.2 mile version will seem familiar to most but I’ve rerouted us down the red trail at intersection 33 rather than the “ankle breaker” section of of the RT trail near Indian Rock Shelter. But before you get all weepy and think that this is a cakewalk, don’t worry, the downhill between 48 and 58 will keep you on your toes, not to mention the climb up to the Fire Tower Summit which is always, ahem, fun. And remember, daylight savings time ends so SET YOUR CLOCKS BACK before the run.
And after the run, you’ll want to hang around when we celebrate Tony Godino’s birthday with cupcakes and whatever Judy has up her sleeve. We’ll make a party of it. Please let us know if you’re coming by submitting the form below, thanks.
Next week we’ll be at Michigan Road to run the Michigan to Kimberly Bridge course.
Sunday, October 27, 9:15 a.m.
This Sunday, October 13 at 9:15 a.m, meet at Muscoot Farm (http://goo.gl/maps/dTDiT) for the Run the Farm 5 Mile Trail Race. This 5 mile course starts from the farm and follows the outlying trails around Muscoot. You can download a map of the five-mile course here.
8:30 Kids’ Race 18:45 Kids’ Race 2

Next week we have a very special event you won’t want to miss. More on that to come.
Sunday, October 20, 8:00 a.m.
This Sunday, October 20 at 8:00 a.m, meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Trailside Museum when we run the 7 mile Museum to Blue route. This course will start down the orange trail and wind past Raven Rocks before heading back via the blue trail and Kimberly Bridge. This time of year, the view from Raven Rocks and the beautiful blue trail will be particularly nice.
Saturday, October 19, 8:00 a.m.
This Saturday, October 19 at 8:00 a.m, meet at the Muscoot Farm parking lot (http://goo.gl/maps/dTDiT) for a course check of the Run the Farm loop. This 5 mile course will start from the parking lot at 8:00 and follow the Run the Farm loop with the exception of finishing in the parking lot. If you’re signed up for the race, you’ll want to come to this last course check and test out the trail. You can download a map of the five-mile course here. Just please stay off of any farm equipment and park on the side of the lot away from the farm.
We’ll be back at Muscoot again next week for the Run The Farm race.
Sunday, October 13, 8:00 a.m.
This Sunday, October 13 at 8:00 a.m, meet at the Muscoot Farm parking lot (http://goo.gl/maps/dTDiT) for a course check of the Run the Farm loop. This 5 mile course will start from the parking lot at 8:00 and follow the Run the Farm loop with the exception of finishing in the parking lot. If you’re signed up for the race, you’ll want to come to one of the course checks and test out the trail. You can download a map of the five-mile course here.
We’ll be back at Muscoot again next week for the last course check before race day.
Sunday, October 6, 8:00 a.m. New Meeting Location: Trailside Museum
This Sunday, meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Trailside Museum Lot when we run the Meadow Dry Loop. This approximately six-mile course follows much of the Leatherman’s Loop but nixes the water crossings and mud flats. What’s left? Still a challenging and fun run on what will be one of the most colorful days of the year.
For those who are running Paine to Pain, good luck to all of you. If you’d like to car pool, meet at the Lewisboro Town Park lower parking lot at 7:00 and the 684 exit 4 park and ride at 7:15. We’ll see you again next week at Muscoot Farm for one of two course checks of the Run the Farm course.
Sunday, September 29, 8:30 a.m. (kids’ race), 9:15 a.m. (adult race)
This Sunday, meet at Mountain Lakes Park (201 Hawley Road, North Salem, New York 10560), when we race the Sarah Bishop Bushwhack. All that training and those course checks come down to this—a 10k trail race featuring a challenging course that includes the highest peak in Westchester—Bailey Mountain—and beautiful views of Lookout Point and Hemlock Lake. The weather all week will be beautiful and the conditions on Sunday, ideal. Registration closes at midnight on Thursday night but we’ll hold a few places open if you want to bring a friend at the last minute. On-site registration will be $40 and we ask that you have exact change.
Next week we’ll be back at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in the Meadow parking lot to run the Dry Loop—that is, if you’re not going to be running Paine to Pain.
Hope to see you out there for this first annual Sarah Bishop Bushwhack.
Sunday, September 22, 8:00 a.m.
This Sunday, meet at Mountain Lakes Park (201 Hawley Road, North Salem, New York 10560), when we do a course check of the Sarah Bishop Bushwhack. This 10k trail race features a challenging course that includes the highest peak in Westchester—Bailey Mountain—and beautiful views of Lookout Point and Hemlock Lake. If the upper gate is open, park where indicated on the map—in the lot near the pool, accessible by an unpaved road across from Hemlock Lake. If the upper gate is closed, park near the lot at the trailhead to Lookout Point.
Next week we’ll be back at Mountain Lakes Park the Sarah Bishop Bushwhack Race. It’s going to be a lot of fun.
Sunday, September 15, 8:00 a.m.
This Sunday, meet at Mountain Lakes Park (201 Hawley Road, North Salem, New York 10560), when we do a course check of the Sarah Bishop Bushwhack. Next week we’ll be back at Mountain Lakes Park for our final course check before the event.
Sunday, September 8, 8:00 a.m. This Sunday, meet at Westmoreland Sanctuary when we run 5.2 Mile Westmoreland Perimeter Loop. It’s been a while since we ran this course that was hit hard last year by Sandy but I’ve been assured that the trails are runnable and in good shape. I won’t have the chance to mark the trail in advance so bring a map and keep your eyes open for trail markers along the way. Those wanting a longer run can run part or all of the trail again or cross the road to Butler Sanctuary and add another 3.5 miles following the perimeter trails (see trail map). See Google Map ››
Saturday, September 7, 8:00 a.m. This Saturday is the Katonah 5k Road and Trail Race. While a 5k might be a shorter distance than you’re used to, Christy’s first-place finish last week proved that shorter races have a place in anyone’s training schedule. And besides, it’s a great event benefitting a great cause. Learn more at Raceit.com.
Sunday, September 1, 8:00 a.m. This Sunday, meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Meadow Parking Lot when we run the Meadow to Overlook loop. This is the same route we ran on July 4th and includes a finish at the river. We’ll start from the Meadow lot and pass the Trailside Museum before heading into the southern portion of the reservation and returning via Schoolhouse Road. At the end of the run, you have the option of cooling off by crossing the stream instead of heading over the bridge. Depending on the heat, it might be a refreshing change. I’ll also drop a cooler of water at Michigan Road which is the halfway point of the run.
Saturday, August 31, 8:00 a.m. We’ll be doing a bit of trail cleanup for the Sarah Bishop Bushwhack. Anyone interested in giving us a hand while running between stops, meet at the parking lot at the trailhead to Lookout Point at 8:00 a.m.
If you’re up for a faster Saturday run, meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Meadow Parking Lot to run the Meadow, Michigan and Museum loop. I’d suggest turning left at intersection 46, though, to keep in the shade of the pine forest near the end.
Monday, September 2, 9:30 a.m.
St. John’s Episcopal Parish is proud to bring you the 3rd Annual South Salem Church Tavern Biathlon. Race director Brian Stempel, a Sunday Runs regular, makes sure everyone has a great time and the after-race barbeque is not to be missed. The majority of the funds generated from the race will go to same worthy charities we continue to support (The Carpenter’s Kids Program, Community Center of Northern Westchester, and The Wounded Warrior Project). – See more and register ››
I’m still deciding on next week’s venue. Any suggestions?
Sunday, August 25, 8:00 a.m.
Let’s change things up thus Sunday at a different venue. Meet at the Muscoot Farm parking lot for a run of the Run the Farm 5 mile course. Even though there are a couple months before that race, it’s always a great trail. Those who want a longer run can go back out for a second full or partial loop. You can see a map of the five-mile course here.
Saturday, August 24, 8:00 a.m.
Anyone interested in a Saturday run can meet at the pool parking lot in Mountain Lakes Parkand follow the 10K Sarah Bishop Bushwhack. We’ll be doing some Sunday Runs on the course before race day so if you miss this, you’ll still have a chance to run before the race. You can see a map of the course here.
Next week we’ll be back in the Reservation at the Meadow parking lot to run the Meadow to Overlook course.
Sunday, August 18, 8:00 a.m. This Sunday we’ll switch things up a bit and run a longer distance to prepare for the Paine to Pain race in the fall. Meet at the trailhead for the Leatherstocking trail in New Rochelle (Google map: 2 Hillside Crescent, New Rochelle, NY). We’ll follow the Paine to Pain map through Saxon Woods, by the Hutch, and return via Mill Road/North Ave. for a 10 mile loop. If you’d like to do the full loop, you can continue on the full 13.1 mile course back to the starting point. Limited on-street parking is available on Hillside Crescent. If that is full, park on Lyncroft Road (around house number 312) and follow the course map to the trailhead.
Those who want to car pool from Lewisboro and Ridgefield can meet at the town park at 7:20. Those coming from other points can meet at the Park and Ride, exit 4 on 684, at 7:35. That should give everyone enough time to get to the trail for an 8:00 start.
Saturday, August 17, 8:00 a.m.
Meet at the Trailside Museum, Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, and run the Museum to Raven Rocks 6 mile loop. This is the trail that heads over Fox Hill initially which will certainly get your attention. After that, the course becomes somewhat more forgiving and ends on the beautiful downslope of the orange trail.
Sunday, August 11, 8:00 a.m.
This Sunday, meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Michigan Road lot when we run a new course—the Green Rock Trail. We’ll start out on the beautiful (and relatively easy) Green trail then transition to the rock trail at the southern portion of the park. We’ll be going down the “stairs” this time which means we’ll have to climb up to Raven Rocks before returning via the Yellow trail. It’s a 6.5 mile mixed bag of wide trails and single path, level ground and hills. Should be a lot of fun. See the map page ›› | Download the PDF ››
Saturday, August 10, 8:00 a.m.
For those interested in a Saturday run, meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Michigan Road lot to run the Michigan to Kimberly Bridge course. It’s always a favorite that we’ll be running soon on a future Sunday.
The Sarah Bishop Bushwhack is a challenging 10k trail race held in Mountain Lakes Park, Westchester, New York, and benefitting educational wellness programs in area schools. The scenic course is named in honor of the hermitess of West Mountain, who lived alone for more than two decades around the turn of the 19th century in a small cave beneath an outcropping of rock on the eastern slope of the hill.
On September 29, 2013, we honor her indomitable spirit and oneness with nature with the Sarah Bishop Bushwhack and Sarah’s Scramble 1.5 mile kids’ race which takes runners on paths near her cave in the wooded Mountain Lakes Park, a 1,082-acre forested landscape with five lakes, spectacular views, and a few hills in between.
