SUNDAY: RAVEN ROCKS RUN

On Sunday, November 10, at 9:00 am., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Cross River, NY, when we run the Fifth Annual Raven Rocks Run. The race will start in the Meadow — same spot where the Leatherman’s Loop begins. But instead of heading down towards the river as the Loop does, the course climbs up to the highest points in the park, past the old fire tower, before heading back for a downhill and flat finish. New course this year means a new chance for a PR. We’ll do a course check starting PROMPTLY at 7:00 a.m.

SATURDAY: LEWISBORO TOWN PARK

On Saturday, November 9, at 7:00 a.m., meet at Lewisboro Town Park, Upper Lot, ready to run a new course—the Town Park to Kimberly Multidistance Loop. This offers runners distances from 6 to 11 miles starting and finishing on the same trails. I won’t be running this Saturday so BYO maps. But if you miss this, don’t worry, we’ll be doing this on a Sunday soon.

Hope to see you out there this weekend.
Lee Willett

Great running with this big group on Sunday. And a big happy 75th birthday to Tony Godino, without whose inspiration for starting the Leatherman’s Loop, this group of ours would not exist. Thanks Tony for everything.

SUNDAY

On Sunday, September 30, at 9:00 a.m., get ready to race the 6th Annual Sarah Bishop Bushwhack—a challenging 10K (ish) trail race featuring the highest peak in Westchester, Bailey Mountain, and beautiful views of Lookout Point and Hemlock Lake. We’ve changed the course and eliminated the Hunt Lane road in favor of giving you more trails. Online registration closes at midnight on Thursday night but we will have same-day on-site registration. Race day registration will be $40 (exact change, please). Also aim to be in the park before 8:45 a.m. The road will be blocked at 9:00 a.m. for the start of the race so if you’re not there by then, well, you get the picture. If you’re looking to pre-run the course, arrive at 6:15 a.m. for a 6:30 a.m. start and make one last course check before the race. If you’re not signed up, register here ››

SATURDAY

On Saturday, September 29, at 7:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Meadow Lot ready to run one of the Twisted Loops. These eight-mile loops weave through the park using trails that meander back and forth so you’ll want to make sure you bring a map with you. I recommend the green loop which will take you to the overlook but feel free to choose something else. Bring your own maps, though, since I’ll be setting up for Sarah Bishop while you’re running. Download the PDF ››

Meanwhile, enjoy the picture from the past run at Mianus River Park. What a beautiful day to be at this little gem.

April 22, Leatherman’s Loop

LeathermansLoop.org

On Sunday, April 22, I hope to see many of you at the 32nd Annual Leatherman’s Loop. For detailed instructions, visit LeathermansLoop.org. You can pick your bib and shirt up on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the WPA gallery across from the admission booth at the Reservation.

Also, the Sunday Run T-shirts are in and I’ll be distributing them on Saturday and Sunday. If you ordered one, see me. There may be a few extras but I won’t be sure until I’ve accounted for all of the shirts on order.

On Saturday, April 21, at 6:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Meadow Lot and run the Meadow 8×4 loops. Similar to the Michigan 8×4, this is a series of 4-ish mile loops that give you the opportunity of returning to the lot as an aid station. Since Bear Mountain is only two weeks away, this will be your last chance for a long run. Running starts at 6:00 a.m. but you can come by and start whenever you want. Plus, pick up your bib and Loop shirt at the WPA gallery across from the admission booth at the Rez from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

Hope to see you out there this weekend.

Lee Willett

Meanwhile, enjoy the group pic from last week. I hear the Meadow to Michigan loop was fun and congratulations to all in the group who won pies for age group wins and thanks to Rob Cummings for working to make the event a lot of fun.

September 18, Where the Pavement Ends

Sunday, September 18, 8:00 a.m. Where the Pavement Ends is a fun and challenging trail race: fun for the everyday runner who can experience the beauty of these beautiful trails and challenging for the competitive trail runner who can match up against the best racers in the northeast. It’s 4-plus miles of sometimes narrow and hilly terrain. All of the muscles that never get any work from all of that road running will definitely be used on this course.  It is a great mix of fire road, singletrack, flats, hills, and one fast downhill section right towards the end. Meet at the Ridgebury School, South Shore Drive, Ridgefield, CT and be ready to run at 8:00 a.m. This is another in the Trail Mix Series of races. Sign up here ››

May 22, A Mild Sprain

This Sunday, May 22, at 9:45 a.m., meet at Sprain Ridge Park, Yonkers, for the fifth annual A Mild Sprain—the second in the Trail Mix Series of races. Race director David Vogel always makes sure this is a fun and challenging 4.25 mile race so plan on attending. Check in starts at 8:30 so come early and hang out before the race. Race-day registration is available.

Also available and starting at 8:00 a.m. is The Running Goddess 5k at Lasdon Park. This is a multi-terrain race through the park and proceeds support women and girls in their pursuit of health and education.

Now, I know what you’re thinking…. Yes, it is possible to run both races—think of this as the cross county challenge (because to do it, you need to cross the county). Run The Running Goddess 5k, jump in your car and (obeying all local speed limits) make your way to Sprain Ridge Park. The travel time is 35 minutes so you should have just enough time. Running Goddess race director Bettina Sementilli will make sure the race starts on time so you should be able to run A Mild Sprain.

Saturday, May 21, 8:00 a.m.
Looking for a Saturday run? I suggest checking out Zofnass Preserve in Pound Ridge. We’ll be there in a couple of weeks so this is your chance to check it out first.

April 26, Leatherman’s Loop

I look forward to seeing many of you at the Leatherman’s Loop this Sunday. Good luck to you all and we’ll run together next week.

Important notes from the Leatherman’s Loop team

Race organizers Mike Paletta, Tony & Judy Godino, Rob Cummings and the dedicated Leatherman’s Loop volunteers have been working hard to set up this year’s event. All we need is YOU!

Below are some important instructions regarding the Loop. Registration is packed full. We will need your help to ensure that loop day goes smoothly.

Here are some tips that you can incorporate into your plan for the morning and the day:

1.) ARRIVE EARLY! Please plan to arrive at the park before 8:20. Car pool if you can. Traffic will back up considerably at the park entrance as race time approaches. Please be patient. The regular $10 parking fee is incorporated as part of the loop entry fee so entry will go more quickly. It is always wise to arrive earlier than you think you need to in order to make sure you are all set by race start time (9am). This is especially true if it is your first time running the Loop.

2.) DRIVE SLOWLY and CAREFULLY in the Park! Watch the volunteers who are directing the parking. PARK TIGHT! Plan ahead – Car Pool if you can!. For a helpful overview of the race location (parking, start, bib pickup), check the logistics page on the website.

Sarah Bishop Bushwhack

Sunday, September 29, 2013

The Sarah Bishop Bushwhack is a challenging 10k trail race held in Mountain Lakes Park, Westchester, New York, and benefitting educational wellness programs in area schools. The scenic course is named in honor of the hermitess of West Mountain, who lived alone for more than two decades around the turn of the 19th century in a small cave beneath an outcropping of rock on the eastern slope of the hill.

On September 29, 2013, we honor her indomitable spirit and oneness with nature with the Sarah Bishop Bushwhack and Sarah’s Scramble 1.5 mile kids’ race which takes runners on paths near her cave in the wooded Mountain Lakes Park, a 1,082-acre forested landscape with five lakes, spectacular views, and a few hills in between. Run the Farm

Sunday, Oct 27, 2013

The fourth annual Run the Farm 5 mile trail race and “Kids Run The Farm” races is officially open for registration.

The races will be held Sunday, Oct 27, 2013 with kids races starting at 8:30am. The kids races will be divided into two completely separate events – a 1.1 mile run for kids 7-12 and a 0.6 mile trail run for kids age 6 and under. Both kids events will be completed before the 5 miler is started at 9:15am.See race website for more details and logistics information.

We are happy to bring this event back for its fourth year. Runners love the scenic and tough 5 mile course. Kids are challenged with a great taste of the trails at Muscoot Farm in their very own races. The farmers at the market love the energy (and the business!) that the race brings out that crisp October Sunday morning.

A Mild Sprain

Congratulations to all of the Sunday Runners that competed in A Mild Sprain this past Sunday. It was great to see so many familiar faces and Dave Vogel really knows how to put on an event—thanks Dave. Big shout-outs to Christy Leggiero and Eleanor Hershey for finishing second and third overall in the women’s division and Tony Godino and I managed to finish first in our respective age groups. Lots of other great performances from the group as well and you can see the final results posted on the Mild Sprain site. It was a great showing for the Sunday Runners and a great cause to run for.

April 21 Leatherman’s Loop

I look forward to seeing many of you at the Leatherman’s Loop this Sunday. I know we’re expecting a little rain later this week but that should just make the mud flats that much more fun. On the 28th, we’ll be meeting at Mountain Lakes Park for a new version of the course that Mark has set up for us. This time, we’ll be going to the highest point in the park—the highest point in the county, actually. Don’t miss this fun run. I’ll send an update and post the trail map before the event. Have a great race everyone. —Lee Willett

The 27th Running of the Leatherman’s Loop will be on Sunday, April 21, 2013 at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Cross River, NY.

All runner registration will be via Loop Lottery. The Loop Lottery will open at 12:01am Thursday, January 10th, 2013 and close Monday, January 14, 2013 at midnight — 5 full days total. There is no immediate rush to sign up — but don’t wait too long lest you forget! Once it is closed we won’t accept any new lottery entrants.

To sign up, visit the Leatherman’s Loop website during the lottery registration period and there will be links to the registration site. Runners will enter their information into the lottery registration, including a credit card number. Your credit card will not be charged unless you are picked in the Loop Lottery. After the Loop Lottery entry closes on Monday, January 14th we will have the drawing for winners on or just after Monday, January 21st. Lottery winners and losers will be notified via email and winners will be charged the race entry fee (and optional t-shirt cost if ordered). Please understand that there are more runners than spots available. Some folks are bound to be disappointed when they are unable to get in for 2013. We hope everyone gets the reasoning behind the lottery and the course limits.

We have put together a list of frequently asked questions about the Loop Lottery. It addresses questions about group lottery entryduplicate registrations, and other questions you might have. We are interested in making the lottery as simple and hassle-free as possible. We appreciate any feedback or thoughts you have and can share with us. I hope everyone can make it to Muscoot Farm on Sunday for this fun 5-mile yearly tradition. A 1-mile kids race starts the day off and participants get Farm Bucks to spend at the Farmers Market. Great family event. Learn more at RunTheFarm.org.

Next week we’ll be back at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation meadow parking lot when we gather to run a trail half marathon covering 13.1 miles of the park. A 6 mile and 8.5 mile loop will be offered as well for those who want a more, um, leisurely run.

Run the Farm Registration is Open
