On Saturday, May 8, at 6:00 a.m., meet at Ramapo-Dunderberg Timp Torne Trailhead, Tomkins Cove, NY, ready to run some epic trails at Harriman State Park. Based on responses, this group is focused on the 7 summits but the 5 sisters is an option if you decide the shorter distance is a better fit.
Option 1, the Seven Summits. This is a 28-mile loop with 7,500 feet of vertical gain that tackles seven local summits including an excursion over the Bear Mountain Bridge (twice) to hit Anthony’s Nose. The Current FKT is 5 hours, 26 minutes (unsupported male), and 9 hours 30 minutes (unsupported female), so expect a full day for this traverse.
Option 2, the Five Sisters. This is a 14-mile loop with 3,000 feet of vertical gain that tackles five of the summits within Harriman. Compared to the above, this seems easy but believe me, it’s an aggressive course to tackle.
Logistics: I will meet runners at the lot at 6:00 a.m. and bring whatever aid station gear or supplies you want to the ice skating rink lot at Bear Mountain, approximately mile 15 of the 7 Summits, 8 of the 5 sisters. The lot requires a small detour from the 7 sisters course. I’ll pack water and leave everything in my car—an orange Subaru. Any gear will be returned to the lot where you started and put in Joe’s green Prius. Peter Hofmann will drop water near the lot at the base of Anthony’s Nose at mile 11-ish and Veronica and Gene Leeds will drop water near the Doodletown Trailhead at mile 20-ish. They’ll tell you what to look for at the start of the run. Temperatures look cool with a chance of afternoon rain so water shouldn’t be an issue.
