May 17, Options, Options, Options

This Sunday, May 17, you have some great options to choose from.

Option 1: A Mild Sprain 4.25 mile Trail Race, Yonkers, NY

This Sunday, May 17 at 9:30 a.m., join team Leatherman Harriers and run A Mild Sprain 4.25 trail race in Sprain Ridge Park, Yonkers. This is the second race in the Trail Mix series and race director David Vogel always makes sure this is a fun and challenging event. Race-day registration may be available but check the website for more information. If you want to car-pool for the race, meet at Lewisboro Town Park UPPER lot at 8:00 a.m. and at the Bedford Hills Train Station northern lot (Railroad Ave. side) at 8:20.

Option 2: The Running Goddess 5k

This Sunday, May 17, at 8:00 a.m., come out to Lasdon Park for the third annual Running Goddess 5k. This multi-terrain course combines wooded trails with open fields, a little crushed stone and some pavement to keep you on your toes. Learn more at TheRunningGoddess.com.

For anyone looking for a Saturday run, meet at Mianus River Gorge at 8:30 a.m. and run the 5 mile out-and-back course. While one of our shorter courses, it’s a beautiful run through an old-growth forest.

This Sunday, May 10, at 8:00 a.m, meet at Mountain Lakes Park (201 Hawley Road, North Salem, NY) at the trailhead to lookout point when we run all or parts of a new version of the Mountain Lakes 10k/15k. The full course includes trails within Mountain Lakes Park and recently marked ones in adjacent preserves. Options include the 6-mile loop (solid orange line) or adding the Hunt Lane loop, Hearst-Mead Preserve, Halmi Preserve, and Sturgess Park for the full 15k experience. See the map page here.

Those who have commitments on Sunday can show up on Sunday at 7:00 a.m., bring your own maps, and run the full course early. If you want to catch the group at 8:00, start on the same course but return via the Blue trail when you reach mile 2. That should be a good 4-mile warmup.

Thinking about running A Mild Sprain next Sunday and want to check out the course in advance? Here’s your chance. Meet at Sprain Ridge Park on Saturday, May 9, at 8:00 a.m. for a course check. Those wishing to carpool can meet at Lewisboro Town Park at 7:15 and at the Bedford Hills Train Station northern lot (Railroad Ave. side) at 7:30.

This Sunday, April 5, at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Zofnass Family Preserve on Upper Shad Road in Pound Ridge (see Google Map) when we run everyone’s favorite labyrinthian preserve with a network of trails noted for its crags and rock outcrops. Meet at the main entrance and follow a perimeter loop making all right turns except for exiting the park (you may want to bring a map since I won’t be there this weekend). Make a 6-mile loop counter-clockwise around the preserve excluding the orange, western loop (just ask Mario why). See the map page here. Those looking to start early can arrive at 7:00 which should give you enough time to run the Southern and Central Roundabout loops.

Next week we’ll be back at the Ward Pound Ridge Meadow parking lot when we run the official course check for the Leatherman’s Loop. If you’re planning on running the race, you won’t want to miss this.

Just three weeks before the Leatherman’s Loop. Hope to see you out there this weekend.

On Sunday, March 29, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Meadow Parking Lot when we run the Meadow Dry Loop. This approximately six-mile course follows much of the Leatherman’s Loop but nixes the water crossings and mud flats. What’s left? Still a challenging and fun run and while I call this the “dry loop,” I can’t guarantee you will finish the run with your feet dry. The warm temperatures and rain have signaled the end of ice and snow and the beginning of mud and water. Those looking to do some extra miles can arrive at 7:00 for a 3 to 4 mile loop.

And don’t miss our Saturday dinner at Jewel of Himalaya. Just let us know if you’re coming by Friday night so we can get a head count.

Just four weeks before the Leatherman’s Loop. Time to get out there and train. Hope to see you out there this weekend.

On Sunday, March 22, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Michigan Road lot and run some of the southern trails on the Red/Rock loop. I know we’ve run the Red, Green, and Yellow trails recently and those are generally in good shape—hard packed and stable. The snow melted enough that the trails to the Overlook, while still snow-covered, are at least passable. The southern portion of the Rock Trail, though, is free of snow in many places and a great run if you’re up for the hills. I know we’re expecting more snow on Friday/Saturday but we’ll still meet as planned and evaluate conditions at that time. Those looking to do some extra miles can arrive at 7:00 for a 3 to 4 mile loop.

On Sunday, March 15, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Lewisboro Town Park when we celebrate 5 Years of Sunday Runs with our Six-Mile Inaugural Loop. Five years ago Rob started the runs at the Town Park with a handful of local runners preparing for the Leatherman’s Loop. We’d like to recreate that first run (and add some miles as an option) to commemorate our humble beginnings. I hope some of the runners from that first day will show up. The trails are still snow-covered and hard but Saturday’s rain will change things considerably. Be prepared for anything. Those looking to do some extra miles can arrive at 7:00 for a BR/DH loop.

Sunday, February 22, 8:00 a.m.
This Sunday, meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Kimberly Bridge lot when we run a new course—Blue and Brown. The 4-mile Blue trail has been well packed and is a great run combining the initial long gentle trail and the steep up and down of the Fire Tower. Once back at the parking lot, head off to the DH trail and return via brown to add an additional 2.7 miles. Those who want to do a little more can tack on an extra mile by following DH through the pine forest and returning via Br. I’ve run all of these trails this week and for the most part they’re well compacted and stable. That said, we are expecting some snow on Saturday night and the temperatures on Sunday should be in the 30s so be prepared for anything.

Those looking to start early can arrive at 7:00 a.m. and run the DH/Br loop but bring a map—I can’t guarantee I’ll be there early this week.

I’ve marked loops of 3 miles, 5.5 miles, and 6.8 miles on the map so you have your choice of distances. As of Thursday, though, I didn’t see any activity on the FH trail from Michigan to the Meadow so I suggest we follow the road for that portion of the run instead.

This Sunday, January 25, at 8:00 a.m, meet at the trailhead to Lookout Point at Mountain Lakes Park (201 Hawley Road, North Salem) when we run a new course—The MLP Perimeter Loop. I’ve run much of the course lately and while there are areas of ice, most of that can be avoided by running at the edges of the path. We may have some snow on Saturday, though, so it’s hard to say what conditions will be like Sunday morning. There are options of adding a little more distance by including the Hunt Lane loop and the Spruce Lake trail. Anyone interested in getting an early start can arrive by 7:15 and get a few miles in before the run but bring your own maps, I’m going long on Saturday. This Sunday, January 18, at 8:00 a.m, meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Trailside Museum when we run the Museum to Blue Route. This 7-mile course starts down the Orange trail and winds its way to Raven Rocks and back by the Blue trail. While it’s 7 miles, the course avoids the steepest uphills (if you can believe that). Options are listed for 6.5 mile and 5.75 mile options as well. Anyone interested in starting early can arrive and be ready to run by 7:15.

For trail condition updates, see our community posts, now in beta testing.

Meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Michigan Road lot and head south on the Red/Green trail making a loop that includes the Red trail, the Green trail and a few other trails as well just to keep it interesting. At 760 feet elevation change, this 6.5 mile course is one of my flatter ones so there’s no excuse not to get out and have some fun. As usual, those looking for a shorter run can find creative ways to reduce the mileage. And those looking to get a few extra miles in can meet early for a 7:15 a.m. start.

Also, save the date of Friday, January 2, 7:00 p.m., for a night run in the reservation. We’re working on securing a lean-to for the evening and if it’s a clear night, we’ll have nearly a full moon to give us some extra light. I’ll post more details as they develop.

This 6.5-mile course starts with a bit of an uphill (that’s being kind) but once you reach the Magic Stairs within the first half mile, you can catch your breath and enjoy yourself. There might be another hill or two along the way but nothing to worry about. By the time you reach the blue trail, you’ll remember what makes that one of our favorites in the park. If you’re not feeling the love of the FH trail, you can start down orange and cut a half mile (and a couple hundred feet of elevation) from the run.

Friday, November 28, at 8:30 a.m. Looking for a way to burn off those excess calories from Thanksgiving? Meet at Mianus River Gorge at 8:30 a.m. and run the out-and-back 5-ish mile course. Mianus will be closing at the end of the month so this will be the last run there until Spring.

Temperatures are falling but this 6.3 mile course will make sure you keep warm with some sizable hills to challenge you. You’ll have the initial climb to the cell tower, the DH trail climb, and then it’s up the blue trail for everyone’s favorite hill. By the time you’re done with that, any hills that remain will be a piece of cake.

Thanks for everyone who came out last Friday for the night run and for making it such a great success. We’ll be looking to do more of those from time to time. And thank you Barry Fagan, Eric Wilson, and Alan Wegener and family for spending a couple hours at Zofnass on Saturday to scrub the spray paint from the trail. November 22, Zofnass Family Preserve

Help Us Restore Zofnass Family Preserve

The folks at Westchester Land Trust need our help. Toward the end of the summer, Zofnass Family Preserve was vandalized by someone “marking trails” using florescent paint on rocks and trees. Since much of Zofnass is a wetland area, the paint needs to be removed without using harsh chemicals. Fortunately, greater minds than mine have come up with a solution that works without harming the environment. What we need now are some people who can spend a little time implementing their remediation plan. Come out Saturday, November 22, at 9:30 a.m. for whatever time you can and help restore the preserve.

Meet at Waterbury Way where the trail crosses (see map here), bring work gloves, a heavy nylon or wire brush, and a gallon or two of water for rinsing. If you have Fast Orange (preferable) or Simple Green cleaners, bring those as well although David Emerson from Westchester Land Trust will be picking some of those up—and dress to get dirty. Barry Fagan, Eric Wilson, Alan Wegener and family, an I spent a couple hours remediating some of the park. Now let’s finish the job.

You’ll definitely want a headlamp or flashlight and probably bring something to drink afterwards—you know, rehydrate. At 383 acres, this preserve is relatively small so we’re going to do things a little differently this week. Instead of a fixed course (that some can’t follow anyway), bring a map of the entire preserve and run whatever trails you find in whatever order you want. I have a favorite course (you can see on Strava) but that doesn’t mean you have to do the same. I’ll put flags on the paths at exit points to keep you in the park and after 75 minutes, we’ll regroup in the parking lot and see just how much distance you covered. This course will take you on the beautiful blue trail, past Raven Rocks, then back via the red/green trail. But bring your own maps this time—I’ll be at one of the races above.

Sadly, I’ve learned that recently there was some vandalism at Zofnass Family Preserve. Someone marked paths using day-glow indelible spray paint on trees, rocks, and soil. Since the preserve is an environmentally-sensitive wetland area, remediation will be both costly and difficult. I’ve been in touch with Westchester Land Trust and asked them to keep me informed if they need volunteers with the work. If anyone knows anything about who might have done this, please contact me or the Westchester Land Trust. I’ll keep you informed as this develops.

Next weekend is The Second Annual Sarah Bishop Bushwhack at Mountain Lakes Park. We’ll be closing online registration late next week and giving the course one final run text Saturday. We hope to see you all there.

Have a great weekend, whatever you decide to do.

This Sunday, September 14 at 8:00 a.m, meet at Mountain Lakes Park in North Salem (201 Hawley Road) when we do a course check of the Sarah Bishop Bushwhack. This is the only course check of the race this year so if you want to check out the course with the group, this is your only chance. Meet at the pool parking lot where race day parking is and get ready to run this 10K-ish new loop that incorporates some of last year’s trails with a few new twists and turns. See the map ››

Saturday, September 13 at 7:00 a.m. For those who want to run on Saturday, Keith Realander will be leading a course check of Where the Pavement Ends. Meet at the course start (10 South Shore Drive, Ridgefield, CT) and check out the trails of the inaugural race of the Trail Mix Series.

Next weekend is Where the Pavement Ends and the Kisco 5K—two great local races to choose from.

Hope to see you out there this weekend.

This Sunday, September 7 at 8:00 a.m, meet at Westmoreland Sanctuary on Chestnut Ridge Road in Mount Kisco when we run the 5.25 mile perimeter loop. This time, we run the course in a clockwise direction and return to the main lot. Those who want an extra challenge can do the Butler loop across the street next. That will add another 3+ miles to the run for a total of around 8.5. See the map ››

Saturday, September 6 at 8:00 a.m. For those who want to run on Saturday, meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Meadow Parking lot and run all or part of a new variation of Eleanor’s Escape. 8.4 or 6.0 mile variations are possible or run your own course. See the map here ››

Also, the Katonah 5K is this Saturday for those of you who like to mix your trail with some road. Learn more here ››

Next weekend we’ll be back at Mountain Lakes Park for our only course check of the Sarah Bishop Bushwhack. You won’t want to miss that.

August 31, Mountain Lakes Park

This Sunday, August 31 at 8:00 a.m., meet at Mountain Lakes Park, at the pool parking lot near Hemlock Lake, when we run the Mountain Lakes 10K. The course is a good preview of the Sarah Bishop Bushwhack but finishes differently. If you want to run the full 15k, follow the course as shown on the map. If you would like to keep it to a 10K, leave off the Hunt Lane loop and the Hearst-Mead and Halmi preserves. Feel free to take the beautiful Spruce Lake trail and the red trail back to the parking lot to complete your run. The course will not be flagged in advance so bring a map if you’re unfamiliar with the park.

Saturday, August 30 at 8:00 a.m.
If you’re looking for a run this Saturday, I suggest meeting at Westmoreland Sanctuary and running the perimeter loop. If you’re up for more, cross the street and add some additional miles in Butler. Two great preserves to start your long weekend.

And don’t forget to register for the new Trail Mix Series—four great events starting September 21. Hope to see you this weekend.

This Sunday, August 24 at 8:00 a.m, meet at the Zofnass Family Preserve on Upper Shad Road in Pound Ridge (see Google Map) when we run everyone’s favorite labyrinthian preserve with a network of trails noted for its crags and rock outcrops. Meet at the main entrance and we’ll follow a perimeter loop making all right turns except for exiting the park (yeah, you’ll probably want to bring a map). We’ll make a 6-mile loop counter-clockwise around the preserve this time excluding the orange, western loop. See the map page here.

For those who want to run Saturday, August 23 at 8:00 a.m., I suggest meet at Mountain Lakes Park at the white trailhead to lookout point and run the Outer OS loop. This isn’t the Sarah Bishop Bushwhack course but it’s still an awesome run. If you miss it, we’ll be up here again next Sunday.

This Sunday, August 17 at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Meadow parking lot when we run the Meadow to Overlook loop. The six-mile loop will take you to the Trailside Museum, past the wigwam to Michigan Road and then return via Shoolhouse Road. The climb to the Overlook at mile four is tough but the view is well worth it. For those looking for a longer run, follow the dotted line to Kimberly Bridge and up Blue for a total of 8 miles (I know that puts two of the steepest climbs on the same run but I’m game if you are).

Anyone interested in a run on Saturday, August 16 at 8:30 a.m., meet at Mianus River Gorge on the Bedford/Greenwich border for this 4.5 mile out-and-back trail run. The preserve opens at 8:30 so if you get there early, be patient. See the map here ››

I’m looking for suggestions for next week’s run. Reservation? Mountain Lakes Park? Butler/Westmoreland? Or something different? Email me with suggestions. Hope to see you out there this weekend.

If you’re up for a longer run, follow the additional dotted lines for a 9-mile course that will take you on some of the less-traveled paths in the northern portion of the park. Either way you do it, there are some hills in this course that are sure to get your attention so enjoy. Download a PDF here ››

Anyone interested in a run on Saturday, August 9 at 8:00 a.m., meet at a new location—the Leon Levy Preserve on Route 123 near Route 35 in South Salem (24 Smith Ridge Rd, South Salem, NY). This is a relatively new preserve created by the Lewisboro Land Trust and the parking lot was just created early this year. While small (a loop is 2.5 miles) the changing terrain really keeps you on your toes and varies from carriage trails to single-track. I’ve been able to create a 5.25 mile spaghetti-like loop using almost all of the trails but feel free to get lost if you’d prefer. Let me know if you’re interested in doing this and I’ll join you. For those who want to run Saturday, June 28 at 8:00 a.m., there is a contingent of runners that are going to run the Mountain Lakes 15K (or the 10K option). Meet at the pool parking lot as before. The trail won’t be flagged but Mark Vincent will be there to make sure everyone makes it through. Just in case, though, you might want to bring a map.

And if you want to start your weekend off one day early, meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Trailside Museum on Friday, June 27 at 8:00 a.m. for a run down to Raven Rocks and back via the Meadow. I don’t have a map of this but something similar to this map but against the arrows and following FH to the Meadow.

This Sunday, May 25 at 8:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Trailside Museum for a very special run. Since a number of Sunday runners (I won’t mention names—you know who you are) seem to have difficulty following my maps, this is your chance to make your own. The morning of the run at the museum, I’ll set a destination and even give you a map to get you there (although you can ignore that if you want and take your own route). Your challenge is to get to that destination and back taking any path you choose. The shortest out-and-back will be 5 miles but you can make the run as long as you’d like. This Sunday, it will be impossible to take a wrong turn.

Saturday, May 24, at 8:30 a.m. Meet at the entrance to Mianus River Gorge when the preserve opens at 8:30 and follow the red trail south taking every left. Race-day registration is still open although online registration is closed. If you want to car-pool for the race, meet at Lewisboro Town Park UPPER lot at 8:00 a.m. and at the park-and-ride off exit 4 on route 684 at 8:20.
