SUNDAY, LEWISBORO TOWN PARK

On Sunday, December 15, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Lewisboro Town Park, upper lot, when navigate the 9.6 mile Kessel Run. With less than a week to go before the release of the next Star Wars movie, it seems appropriate we run a special out-and-back segment that starts at Lewisboro Town Park and ends at Gilmore Pond on the southern end of the Rez. Peeter “Millennium Falcon” Muursepp holds the record of less than 12 parcecs and the force is strong with Veronica “Rey” Leeds as well. If you’re not up for the full run, turn around at any point. Early risers start at 7:00 a.m. See the map here ››

SATURDAY, MICHIGAN ROAD LOT

On Saturday, December 14, at 7:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Michigan Road Lot and help flag next Sunday’s Run. Since there are multiple bushwhacks on this run, I’ll need to lightly flag the course so that you can find your way. Total distance will be around 8 miles. If you’d like to give me a hand, meet me at 7:00 a.m. Or just show up at 7:00 and make your own course. That’s fine too.

Hope to see you out there this weekend.

Great run at Bennett’s Pond and an equally great brunch after. Thanks everyone and especially Teren for hosting all of us.

SUNDAY, BENNETT’S POND

On Sunday, December 8, at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Bennett’s Pond main lot when we run a new course that a handful of you ran in September. This course takes us on a counterclockwise loop to the overlook and back. Along the way, you’ll get to try out the new Ridge trail we found last weekend and then plunge down the red trail which many of you haven’t seen yet. If you want to start early, arrive at 7:00 for a few extra miles. After the run, Sunday Run regular, Teren, has invited the group to brunch so we can hang out a bit. I can’t think of a better group to hang out with for brunch.

SATURDAY, LEONARD PARK

This Saturday, December 7, at 7:00 a.m., meet at the gazebo at Leonard Park in Mt. Kisco (see map) when we tackle some different trails with the Leonard Park Half. We’ll start in Leonard park, go through Marsh Sanctuary, Merestead, Butler, and Westmoreland Sanctuary. Runners will have a choice of various distances from 5 to 13 miles. See the map ››

Also, NYNJ Trail Conference is having a run from Teatown to Croton Dam at 9:30 Saturday. Details here ››

Hope to see you out there this weekend.

SUNDAY, LEWISBORO TOWN PARK

This Sunday, December 1, at 8:00 a.m, meet at the Lewisboro Town Park upper parking lot (see map) when we  run a perennial favorite—the Fat Ass Run. Since the bridges are still out, this year’s course will follow the Town Park to Kimberly map and give you from 6 to 11 miles of calorie-burning fun. Anyone interested in getting an early start can arrive at 7:00 a.m. Diehards start at 5:00 a.m.

SATURDAY, TRAILSIDE MUSEUM

On Saturday, November 30, at 7:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Trailside Museum lot, when we run a new course—Trailside to Joe 7 mile loop. Those who’ve run with me for a while know that once the cold temperatures set it, I’m more inclined to do some exploring in the parks. For this run, We’ll head over to Joe’s Hill on the Western part of the Rez. While the Dancing Rock Run includes part of Joe’s Hill, we’ll push a little farther west to the top of it where most of you have never been. There are a couple of other bushwhacks on the course as well so this may not be one of your fastest seven mile runs.

FRIDAY, ZOFNASS FAMILY PRESERVE

This Friday, November 30, at 8:00 a.m, meet at the Zofnass Family Preserve on Upper Shad Road in Pound Ridge (see Google Map) when we run everyone’s favorite labyrinthian preserve with a network of trails noted for its crags and rock outcrops. Meet at the main entrance and we’ll follow a perimeter loop making all right turns except for exiting the park. We’ll make a 6-mile loop counter-clockwise around the preserve this time excluding the orange, western loop. This is the perfect antidote to the Black Friday crunch.

And great, if wet, run with this group on the Annunaki Bushwhack. If you’d like to learn more about the artist, visit his personal Facebook page, another more cryptic Facebook page, or website.

SUNDAY: KIMBERLY BRIDGE

On Sunday, November 24, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Kimberly Bridge lot, when we run something new—The Annunaki Bushwhack. Most of you have seen the two large annunaki paintings in the Rez but there is one more, visible from the Blue Trail, but to get a good look at it, we’ll need to go a little off-trail. Start at 7:00 a.m. for an additional 4 miles.

SATURDAY: MOUNTAIN LAKES PARK

On Saturday, November 23, at 7:00 a.m., meet at Mountain Lakes Park, 201 Hawley Drive, North Salem, NY, when we run the 2019 Sarah Bishop course. Meet at the trailhead to Lookout Point. Although I’ll take credit for creating the course, I’ve never actually run it in its entirety so I’m looking forward to testing it out. Word is that the OS trail has been rerouted so we’ll check out that change as well.

Hope to see you out there this weekend.

SUNDAY: SIGHTS AND HEIGHTS

On Sunday, November 17, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Michigan Road lot when we run the 7.5 mile Sights and Heights run. This course will take us to the Overlook, Dancing Rock, Raven Rocks, and the Firetower before returning. Note the intentional shortcut near 35 and 36 on the map—if you know where to find that. Early risers can start at 5:00 a.m. for 8 miles or 7:00 a.m. for an additional 4. And if you’re looking for some extra credit, head over to Conquer the Forest 5k race after the pre-run.

SATURDAY: MICHIGAN TO CLARK

On Saturday, November 16, at 7:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Michigan Road lot, when we run the Michigan to Clark Preserve run. This course takes us off the Reservation on an access trail to Clark Preserve on the southern edge of the park where we’ll make a perimeter loop before heading back the way we came. While not a large park, Clark offers some nice trails and a mix of terrain.

Great seeing so many friends at Raven Rocks this past Sunday. Congratulations to all of you who competed this year and check out the photos from the race.

SUNDAY: RAVEN ROCKS RUN

On Sunday, November 10, at 9:00 am., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Cross River, NY, when we run the Fifth Annual Raven Rocks Run. The race will start in the Meadow — same spot where the Leatherman’s Loop begins. But instead of heading down towards the river as the Loop does, the course climbs up to the highest points in the park, past the old fire tower, before heading back for a downhill and flat finish. New course this year means a new chance for a PR. We’ll do a course check starting PROMPTLY at 7:00 a.m.

SATURDAY: LEWISBORO TOWN PARK

On Saturday, November 9, at 7:00 a.m., meet at Lewisboro Town Park, Upper Lot, ready to run a new course—the Town Park to Kimberly Multidistance Loop. This offers runners distances from 6 to 11 miles starting and finishing on the same trails. I won’t be running this Saturday so BYO maps. But if you miss this, don’t worry, we’ll be doing this on a Sunday soon.

Hope to see you out there this weekend.

Great running with this big group on Sunday. And a big happy 75th birthday to Tony Godino, without whose inspiration for starting the Leatherman’s Loop, this group of ours would not exist. Thanks Tony for everything.

SATURDAY: DEVIL’S DEN

On Saturday, November 2, at 7:00 a.m., meet at Devil’s Den, 3 Pent Road, Weston, CT, when we run a new course—the Devil’s Ledge. This course will take us on the classic perimeter loop of the park but extend that to the Great Ledge then back via the smaller and westernmost trails in the park. Afterwards, we can stop by Tusk and Cup for an excellent cup of coffee.

Next Sunday is the Raven Rocks Run—the last Trail Mix Series race of the year. Don’t miss it. Hope to see you out there this weekend.

SUNDAY: MEADOW LOT

On Sunday, October 27, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Meadow Lot and come ready to run the Raven Rocks Course. Here’s your chance to get a preview of the Raven Rocks Run on November 11. Those wanting to start early can arrive at 6:00 for a four-mile loop or 7:00 for a an additional four-mile loop (no 5:00 a.m. this week). No final word yet whether the course will change but I know some of the trails look very different. This is your last chance to check them out before race day.

Teatown Trails Running

SATURDAY: TEATOWN TRAILS

On Saturday, October 26, at 7:00 a.m., meet at the Teatown Nature center, 1600 Spring Valley Rd, Ossining, NY, when we run some of the Teatown Trails. Normally, we’d run the classic Teatown to Kitchawan 13 mile course but we ran (and got lost) on some of the other trails the park has to offer so let’s try this again. This time, we’ll change things up again and incorporate some of the eastern trails we haven’t seen yet. Final total of this course is around 11 miles but you can adjust longer or shorter as necessary. Hope to see you there.

SATURDAY: KENNEDY HIGH SCHOOL

On Saturday, October 19, at 7:00 a.m., meet at John F. Kennedy High School on Route 138 in Somers (54 NY-138, Somers, park in the Northen lot), when we run the Kennedy to Reis Park/Angle Fly Preserve. We’ll run from the trailhead of the Kennedy Trail, cut through to Somers High School, then make our way to Reis Park. I’ve outlined a 7.3 mile run but you have the option of continuing on to Angle Fly and turn this into a half marathon. I don’t have a PDF map for this, but I do have .kml and .gpx files if you want to see what I’m thinking.

Looks like a small but definitely stylish crew last weekend judging by their orange transportation choice. I feel right at home. Congratulations to everyone who ran races or just came out for fun.

Hope to see you out there this weekend,

October 12 & 13: Meadow to Green and the Crazy 8

see map

SUNDAY: Meadow Lot

On Sunday, October 13, at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Meadow Lot when we run the Meadow to Green Loop. This course heads to the Trailside Museum before circling around to Michigan Road. From there, take the Green trail, which is a sizeable hill, to some of the smaller, lesser-used trails in the Southern portion of the park. While I have the trail marked to cross Michigan Road and catch the CB trail, I recommend taking the alternative route past the park office, maybe even to the Br trail and return via FH to the Meadow. Options include an additional half mile down LL and up to the Overlook or you can make the run shorter by eliminating the Green trail. Anyone looking to start early can arrive at 5:00 a.m., 6:00 a.m., or 7:00 a.m. for a few extra miles but BYO maps—I’m out this weekend.

Saturday: Lewisboro Town Park

This Saturday, October 12, at 7:00 a.m., meet at Lewisboro Town Park Upper Lot when we run The Crazy 8 Run. This 8-mile, figure-8 course will take runners on the Blue trail and over the fire tower. If you’re not up for the full distance, turn back at Kimberly Bridge for a respectable 4.5 mile run. I’ll be away this weekend so BYO maps please.

As most of you know, Jeff and I will be running the Midstate Massive 100 mile race this weekend and a number of the group will be supporting us on the run. You won’t be able to live track us but our crew will be posting updates as they can at crew.sundayruns.org. Follow along.

Sunday: The Stairmaster

On Sunday, October 6, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Michigan Road lot, ready to suffer on The Stairmaster, also known as the Michigan to Spy Rock 7 Mile Loop. This trail starts on FH and features both the Magic Stairs and The Stairs to Spy Rock, so you can “enjoy” ample elevation change. There are options for shortening the distance if you are so inclined. Early risers can start at 5:00, 6:00, or 7:00 and run any of the Michigan 8 x 4 loops except for the magenta one but bring your own maps, Lee has the early shift off. Let’s celebrate Lee and Jeff’s last Sunday run in style before they embark on their Midstate Massive 100 adventure.

Saturday: Multi-Park Madness

On Saturday, October 5, at 6:30 a.m., meet at the parking lot at Turkey Mountain, 842 Croton Heights Rd, Yorktown Heights, NY 10598, ready to run a new course courtesy of Kevin Rader—The Multi-Park Madness Run. This 12.8 mile (which should end up being more like 13.1) point-to-point, 6 parks (Sylvan Glen, Granite Knolls, Woodlands Legacy, FDR, Downing Park, Turkey Mountain) + the North County Trail, stitches together a unique combination of trails just ready to be explored. We’ll meet at 6:30 at the end and take a minimum number of cars to the start. If you’re not up for the full run (because you’re training for a long race the next week, say), we’ll be able to drop cars, and water, at FDR park halfway through to make it a 6-mile run. This is one you won’t want to miss.

Thank you

Thank you all for coming out to Sarah Bishop this past Sunday. We had a spectacular day and I think after 7 years of tinkering with the course, we may have found the ultimate combination of trails and not-quite-trails. And a special thanks to our volunteers who help clean the course, park the cars, direct the traffic, mark the course, get everyone registered, hand out awards, photograph the race, and help clean up afterwards. Without you, we could not make this happen. Mark your calendars now for September 27, 2020, when we run the 8th annual Sarah Bishop Bushwhack.

Meet at Mountain Lakes Park (201 Hawley Road, North Salem, New York 10560) before 9:00 a.m. ready to run. We’ve made changes to the course this year that make it even better—we’ve almost totally eliminated the gravel road and we’ve added more bushwhack than ever. We can’t wait for you to race it! SATURDAY: LEWISBORO TOWN PARK

On Saturday, September 28, at 7:00 a.m., meet at Lewisboro Town Park, Upper Lot, when we run some trails most of you haven’t seen. We’ll head across Route 35 to Old Field Preserve and run the trails there heading first toward Schoolhouse Road, then heading behind the Wolf Conservation Center and ending at the double-secret FAA beacon. We haven’t been on these trails for months since they were pretty marshy in the spring but I’m hoping that will the dry weather we’ve had, they’ll be navigable. The total run should be about 5.5 miles and the wolves have been howling in the mornings lately so I think this is a great chance for an adventure. Once we return, we’ll make a loop around the Town Park pond and follow the Blue Trail into the Rez. At that point I have some work to do at Mountain Lakes and will return but anyone who wants to continue into the Rez can and extend the run as long as they’d like.

Hope to see you out there this weekend.

SUNDAY: TRAILSIDE MUSEUM

On Sunday, September 22, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Trailside Museum Lot, ready to run the Trailside to Tower Loop. The Lewisboro Horseman’s Association has its Fall Country Pace event in the Rez on Sunday so they’re going to be using trails on the Western portion of the park after 9:00 a.m. They’re route will be from the Meadow to Schoolhouse Road, LL and Red/Green to Michigan, and then FH to the Meadow. If you see a horse, give it the right of way. Our course will take you up FH and then follow some of the lesser-used trails in the park. It’s the perfect training run for next week’s Sarah Bishop Bushwhack. If you’re interested in starting early, Jeff and I will begin at 4:00 with loops of the Red Trail from Michigan Road then head over to the Trailside Museum before 8:00. We’d love to have company out there.

SATURDAY: BENNETT’S POND

On Saturday, September 21 at 7:00 a.m., we’ll be meeting to run a new 7 mile course at Bennett’s Pond—the Overlook Loop. This new course takes us on a counterclockwise loop to the overlook and back. Along the way, you’ll get to try out the new Ridge trail we found last weekend and then plunge down the red trail which many of you haven’t seen yet. If you want to start early, arrive at 6:00 for a few extra miles. After the run, Sunday Run regular, Teren, will bring some trailhead treats for us so we can hang out a bit though she asks everyone to bring their own mugs. Later in the day, head over to listen to Scott Jurek at Ridgefield Library.

SUNDAY: WHERE THE PAVEMENT ENDS

On Sunday, September 15, 8:00 a.m., run Where the Pavement Ends, a fun and challenging 4-plus miles of sometimes narrow, sometimes hilly, always beautiful trails. It is a great mix of fire road, single track, flats, hills, and one fast downhill section right towards the end. Meet at the Ridgebury School, South Shore Drive, Ridgefield, CT and be ready to run at 8:00 a.m. This is another in the Trail Mix Series of races. Those looking to start early can arrive at 4:00 a.m. with their headlamps and test the trail in the dark. Or arrive at 6:00 a.m. for a last course check before the race. SATURDAY: SARAH BISHOP COURSE CHECK, CLEAN UP

On Saturday, September 14, at 7:00 a.m., meet at Mountain Lakes Park, Pool Parking Lot (if the gate is closed meet at the trailhead to Lookout Point), when we run a course check of Sarah Bishop. We know that there are some branches down that need to be cleared so first we’ll assess the course. Then anyone what wants to help clean up the course, meet that the pool lot at 9:00 a.m. and we’ll send teams out to do what’s necessary. Bring a pair of work gloves, rake, bow saw, loppers, and a grass cutter if you have one. Hopefully, we’ll be done by noon. Thanks in advance for your help. Without our volunteers, this race wouldn’t be possible. New: want to get more miles in? We’ll start at 6:00 a.m. as well and return by 7:00.

SUNDAY: MICHIGAN ROAD

This Sunday, September 8, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Michigan Road Lot when we run the Michigan Road Gerrython. Gerry Sullivan has lent his considerable expertise in creating multi-distance loops that include some of the toughest trails in the Reservation. You have options for distances from 5 to 13 miles (see map) so pick a distance, pick a color, and stay on course. I’m planning on starting at 4:00 a.m. with the 13-mile course, returning around 7:00 for a modified 5-mile run, then the 7-mile loop at 8:00. This may be the last 4:00 a.m. start of the year so if you’re night-run curious, this is a great time to test out your headlamp.

SATURDAY: MEADOW LOT

On Saturday, September 7, at 7:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Meadow lot ready to run the Meadow to Armstrong course. This 7-mile course starts in the reservation, then crosses over to Richard’s Preserve and Armstrong before returning back. The entire course is 7 miles but if you want to cut it short, the looped portion is about 5 miles and if you want to go longer, some will be going from Armstrong to Upper Hook to Reservoir Road for a total of about 18 miles. If you’re looking to get one last long training run in, Jeff will be starting a perimeter loop at 4:00 a.m. and would love company for that 12-mile run so you have the opportunity of up to 30 miles today. Mark Vincent

Contribute to a Tribute to Mark Vincent

I know many of us have been trying to find ways to support Mary, Sean, and Ryan in this difficult time. Mary Vincent asked if we would collect and organize from Mark’s running friends a story or favorite memory for her and the boys. She wrote, “I thought it would be nice for us to know how others loved Mark.” As far as what to write: funny, silly, touching—whatever you have! Short, long, fragments. WHATEVER. Your part is just one part of what I’m hoping will be an outpouring of love—fill the bucket word by word. Don’t worry about it being well written or perfect. They just want to know Mark was loved. The only way to make a misstep is to miss this opportunity to share with them something they can hold on to. (If you are unsure just reach out to Karen and we can talk it through.) Several people have drafted something and then asked for feedback. That’s fine too! Just please add your thoughts to the mix.

Please email Karen Haitoff your favorite memory/stories by September 1 so she can put this together for them. Kasci@aol.com

Thanks to everyone who came out on Sunday to run the Mountain Lakes 15k and share stories about Mark. I know he was there with us on the trails and probably enjoyed all the many inventive ways you found to interpret the map.

SUNDAY, MOUNTAIN LAKES PARK

This Sunday, August 18, at 8:00 a.m, meet at Mountain Lakes Park (201 Hawley Road, North Salem, NY) Pool Parking Lot (where you park for the Sarah Bishop Bushwhack) when we run the Mountain Lakes 15K course in honor of Mark Vincent. Mark suggested this run five years ago and many of you remember him running back and forth through sections—particularly the Heart-Mead and Halmi Preserves—to make sure no one got lost. I don’t know how many extra miles he ran that day but I don’t think I’ve ever seen him as exhaused. We can share stories and reminisce and though Mark won’t be there to keep us on course, he’ll be with us every step of the way. If you’re not up for the full distance, bypass the Hunt Lane loop, Hearst-Mead and Halmi Preserves for a more manageable 10K. Early risers can start at 4:00 a.m. for a 4-mile warm-up, 5:00 a.m. for an 8-mile loop or 7:00 a.m. for an additional 4-miles. See the map page here.

Saturday, Westmoreland Sanctuary

This Saturday, August 17, at 7:00 a.m., meet at Westmoreland Sanctuary on Chestnut Ridge Road in Mount Kisco ready to run the 5.25 mile perimeter loop. This time, run the course in a counterclockwise direction and return to the main lot. Those who want an extra challenge can do the Butler loop across the street after the run. That will add another 3 to 5 miles at least for a total of up to 10. We may even take a detour to check out the trail that leads to Fox Lane so some exploring may be involved. See the map ››

Contribute to a Tribute to Mark Vincent

Sunday Run regular, Mark Vincent, passed away Saturday, August 10. Mark was an early member of the group, one of the race directors of the Sarah Bishop Bushwhack, and one of the finest men that I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. He will be missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and local running community. Details ››

I know many of us have been trying to find ways to support Mary, Sean, and Ryan in this difficult time. Mary Vincent asked if we would collect and organize from Mark’s running friends a story or favorite memory for her and the boys. She wrote, “I thought it would be nice for us to know how others loved Mark.”

As far as what to write: funny, silly, touching—whatever you have!

SUNDAY: MICHIGAN ROAD LOT

On Sunday, August 11, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Michigan Road Lot ready to run the Michigan to Spy Rock 7 Mile Loop, or as I like to call it, The Stairmaster. This course starts up the FH trail and heads over the Magic Stairs before turning south past Castle Rock and up The Stairs to Spy Rock. With two sets of stairs to climb, you can expect plenty of elevation. If you’re not up for the full run, there’s an option for shortening it on the map. Early birds can start at 4:00, 5:00, 6:00, and 7:00 for different 4-mile loops. See the map here ››

SATURDAY: BLUE MOUNTAIN

On Saturday, August 10, at 5:30 and 7:30 a.m., meet at the Depew Court lot at Blue Mountain and run the Fourth annual Blue-Per Bowl run. Make one 7.5 mile loop starting at 5:30 a.m. and a second starting at 7:30 a.m. Join in for one or both loops and then head over to Peekskill Coffee House for some recovery food and drink. Kevin Rader will be on hand to make sure you find your way. See the map ››

SUNDAY: LEWISBORO TOWN PARK

This Sunday, August 4, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Lewisboro Town Park Upper Lot when we run The Crazy 8 Run. This 8-mile, figure-8 course will take runners on the Blue trail and over the fire tower. But this version replaces the original direction so you’ll be going up the new  Blue trail and taking a slight bushwhack from the side trail after the Fire Tower to get back to Blue. If you’re not up for the full distance, turn back at Kimberly Bridge for a respectable 4.5 mile run. Early birds can start at 4:00 a.m. for a four-mile loop, 5:00 a.m. for an 8 mile loop or 7:00 a.m. for another 4-mile loop. I’ll be away this weekend so BYO maps please.

SATURDAY: MICHIGAN ROAD LOT

On Saturday, August 3, at 7:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Michigan Road Lot, and run…well..whatever you want I guess—I’ll be away this weekend—just bring your own maps. Red Loops maybe? Something from the Michigan Multiloop course? Head over the Clark Preserve? Or if you need to get long miles in, how about heading over to Hunt/Parker via the Cross River Dam? So many great options. I’ll be back next Saturday for the 4th annual Blue-Per Bowl at Blue Mountain.

Have a great time out there this weekend.

Great running with these folks this past run. Great meeting awesome new people out there. Hope to see you all again soon. Like the SundayRuns Facebook page if you want to be tagged in the photos.

SUNDAY: MEADOW LOT

This Sunday, July 28, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Meadow Parking Lot when we run the Meadow to Overlook loop. We’ll start from the Meadow lot and head toward the Overlook, returning via Schoolhouse Road. Options include 6 and 8 miles but if you’re running the 8 mile course, cross the Cross River at intersection 1. If you’re looking to start early, you’re in luck—we’ll be running 4-mile loops on the hour starting at 4:00 a.m. Show up and start whenever you can.

SATURDAY: KIMBERLY BRIDGE

Last Saturday, we ran Red, Red, Red. This Saturday, July 27, starting at 6:00 a.m., let’s run Blue, Blue, Blue. Meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Kimberly Bridge Lot, where we’re going to run the Blue Loop (the lower part of the map). Nope, not blue hill repeats—loops of the Blue trail. We’ll head out on the wide, flat trail and head up to the Fire Tower from there. This is an approximate 4-mile loop with 600 feet of gain so we’ll regroup and start again on the hour. Join in whenever you can. I’m good for three—maybe four loops. See map ››

Hope to see you out there this weekend.

Enjoy the photo from the last run from Trailside Museum. Yeah, it was hot, but maybe that was just some of the speedsters burning up the trails.

SUNDAY: Trailside Museum

On Sunday, July 21, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Trailside Museum, for a run on a new course—the Trailside to Green Loop. This course will take us along the river, up Blue, down Green, up FH, and down CB. Needless to say, there may be hills involved but when is that a surprise? It’s going to get hot so bring plenty of water for this run. And if you want to beat the heat, you can start at 4:00 a.m. for all or part of a 12-mile perimeter loop or 7:00 a.m. for a 4-mile loop. See the map ››

SATURDAY: Michigan Road

On Saturday, July 20, starting at 6:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Michigan Road Lot, and run the 5.5 mile Red loop. I’m not gonna lie, Saturday is going to be hot so I’m getting any trail running over early. Since the Red loop is one of the fastest in the Rez, we’ll aim to return on the hour, ready to start the next loop. The 6:00 a.m. loop will be counterclockwise and I’ll switch directions every loop after. I’m good for two, maybe three, depending on the weather. Caramoor’s Jazz Festival is this Saturday so after the run, if you’re free, I’d highly recommend this awesome day-long event. Check it out here ››

Hope to see you out there this weekend.

It was great to see so many of you in the photo from last weekend. While I missed you all, you no doubt heard that three of us were in the White Mountains “running” the Pemigewasset (Pemi) Loop. Claudia, Joe C., and I will be happy to share some stories from the trip if you’re interested.

Sunday: Meadow Lot

On Sunday, July 14, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Meadow Lot ready to run the 8.4 or 6 mile Eleanor’s Escape. This course includes some wide open trails where you can pick up speed, some narrow single-track that will give you a challenge, and includes two distances depending on how long you want to run. Since the bridge at intersection 2 is out, cross the stream at intersection 1 before heading east. If you’re looking to start early, Jeff is going to be starting at 4:00 a.m. I suggest running different loops on the hour from the Meadow 8×4 loop course so start on the hour whenever you can. I won’t be joining you this weekend so bring your own maps and someone…take a picture of the group. See the map ››

Saturday: Westmoreland

This Saturday, July 13, at 7:00 a.m., meet at Westmoreland Sanctuary on Chestnut Ridge Road in Mount Kisco ready to run the 5.25 mile perimeter loop. This time, run the course in a counterclockwise direction and return to the main lot. Those who want an extra challenge can do the Butler loop across the street after the run. That will add another 3+ miles at least for a total of around 8.5. I won’t be joining you so bring your own map if you’re unfamiliar with the park. I’m thinking of putting this run on an upcoming Sunday so if you do this, let me know how it goes. See the map ››

SUNDAY: LEWISBORO TOWN PARK

On Sunday, July 7, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Lewisboro Town Park, Upper Lot, when we run one of Peeter’s Fun Runs. This series of runs ends near Fun Climb, a little uphill segment that’s a perfect test to see what gas you have in the tank at the end of the run. We’ll be running the 10 mile loop but there are many ways to shorten this if you’re not up for the whole thing. Double back at intersection 14 will get you about 5 miles. Turning at intersection 49 will get you to 7. And at 48 will get you to around 9 miles. Early risers can start at 5:00 a.m. or 7:00 a.m. for even more…ahem…fun. See the map here ››

SATURDAY: BEAR MOUNTAIN

On Saturday, July 6, at 7:00 a.m., meet at Bear Mountain, Ice Rink Lot, when we run the 5 Sisters course. This 13 mile, quad-shredding exercise in futility, contains 4700 feet of gain so you know it’s going to be a tough run. Come prepared, you have been warned. See the map here ››

The course is 6.8 miles with options to add .5 miles or reduce 1.5 miles as necessary. Early risers can start at 5:00 for 8 more miles or 7:00 for four more. Temps are going to be climbing through the day so stay hydrated. See the map ››

SATURDAY: Michigan to Caramoor

On Saturday, June 29, at 7:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Michigan Road lot, when we run a unique 10 mile out-and-back course to Caramoor center for music and the arts. We’ll follow trails through Richard’s and Armstrong preserves, Upper Hook Road, and a little asphalt but I promise it will be worth it. Leatherman Harrier Tom Curley will meet us at Caramoor and we can take a stroll through the gardens with him before heading back. If you haven’t been to Caramoor yet, this is a great chance to see the grounds. Anyone interested in meeting there directly should arrive at 8:00 a.m. and once the group arrives, we’ll take a tour. Don’t miss this unique event. See the map ››

SUNDAY: BACKWARDS BISHOP

On Sunday, June 23, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Mountain Lakes Park (201 Hawley Road, North Salem, New York 10560), when we run the Sarah Bishop course. We’ll start from the trailhead to lookout point but this time, we’ll start by running up to Hemlock Camp and completing the course in reverse. The Mountain Lakes Backyard Ultra which starts at 6:30 Friday night may still be on so we can stop by their staging area first so we can learn if we need to be mindful of those runners on the trails. If you want to start early, meet at 7:00 a.m.—I’m not planning on being there any earlier this Sunday. See the map.

SATURDAY: BACKYARD VISIT

On Saturday, June 22, at 7:00 a.m., meet at Mountain Lakes Park (201 Hawley Road, North Salem, New York 10560), Hemlock Lake beach—where Sarah Bishop starts. The backyard ultra is staging by the pool so let’s keep out of that area. But if you park at the beach, you can walk back to the pool and see how things are going. There should be a number of runners still in the race that will be arriving around 7:15 so stop by and say hello. Then grab your own map and get running. I suggest modifying this course. From the parking lot, head up the Orange trail, turn right on the white trail to lookout point, and follow the course clockwise, returning on the blue trail to the parking lot. Should be around 6 miles. Bring your own maps, though, I’ll either be at the Backyard Ultra, or I’ll be sleeping…somewhere. See the map.

Good luck to everyone running Manitou’s and the Backyard Ultra this weekend. I look forward to hearing some great stories when I see you out there.

SUNDAY: MICHIGAN ROAD LOT

On Sunday, June 16, at 8:00 a.m., in honor of Father’s Day, we’ll meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Michigan Road Lot, and run a course that dads are sure to love—the Fox Hill to Overlook Loop. We’ll start up Fox Hill (always a favorite), run part of the Rock Trail past Raven Rocks, and take a number of the lesser-used trails in the park to get over to the Overlook before returning. Options include the full 7.75 mile course or a shorter 5.25 miler. This is the last run before Manatou’s or the Backyard Ultra so come out for a last training run. As usual, insomniacs start at 5:00 and early birds start at 7:00.

SATURDAY: BLUE MOUNTAIN

On Saturday, June 15, at 7:00 a.m., meet at the Depew Court Parking Lot at Blue Mountain and run the Blue Mountain Perimeter Loop. This 7 mile course summits Blue Mountain and includes a combination of rocky single-track to wider Jeep trails. Once done, get a bite to eat at Peekskill Coffee House for coffee and a crepe.

Also on Saturday, June 15, at 5:00 a.m. (and after), meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Kimberly Bridge Lot, and join Joe Mo on even more Blue Hill Repeats. This approximately 1.2 mile round-trip run offers 400 feet of elevation. Joe Cloidt owns the all-time repeat record of 28 on the old, now closed, trail, and Joe Mo set the new course repeat record of 23 just last weekend. He’s looking to run for 7 hours so he’ll plan to be there for a while. Start time is 5:00 a.m. but join in whenever.

Next Sunday we’ll be at Mountain Lakes Park for a run and to check on  anyone still running the Backyard Ultra. Hope to see you out there this weekend.

Sunday: Kimberly Bridge

On Sunday, June 9, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Kimberly Bridge Lot, when we run the Kimberly/Raven Loop. This course offers a combination of double-wide trails and twisty single-track. Feel free to take the cliffside trail to Raven Rocks if you want and return by one of three paths for either a 6, 7, or 8 mile run. As usual, early risers can start at 5:00 (no headlamps needed) or 7:00 for some extra miles. See the map.

Saturday: Saugatuck Trail, Weston

On Saturday, June 8, at 7:00 a.m., meet at the Saugatuck Trailhead, 205 Davis Hill Road, Weston, CT, when we run a 13 mile looped course of the Saugatuck trail. Some bushwacking may be involved. For those of you who have run the Brew to Brews or Brew to Brunch runs, you’ll be familiar with some of these trails but as a group, we’ve not seen all of the Saugatuck trail, nor of Alan’s Cutoff—thanks Alan Wegener for that tip. I’m really looking forward to this cutoff that you, and only you, are responsible for. I’m sure it’s fine, really. See the map.

Also on Saturday, June 8, at 5:00 a.m. (and after), meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Kimberly Bridge Lot, and join Joe Mo on a few Blue Hill Repeats. This approximately 1.2 mile round-trip run offers 400 feet of elevation. Joe Cloidt owns the all-time repeat record of 28 on the old, now closed, trail, and Charlotte Dequeker set the new course repeat record of 20 just last weekend. I honestly don’t know what Joe has in mind but I’m sure he’d like some company at some point. Start time is 5:00 a.m. but join in whenever.

After Sunday’s run from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Mountain Lakes Park—as part of the Mountain Lakes Backyard Ultra, and in cooperation with Taro Iteka, park supervisor, there will be a “Trail Maintenance Day” to help maintain the trails and the park. Let Veronica know if you’re interested and she’ll share with you the details. Hope to see you out there this weekend.

TDS 145k

By Billy McArthur

It all started in the summer of 2018 after finishing UTMB’s baby race, the 40k MCC. It was such a beautiful course and the experience of being in Chamonix for UTMB made it so special. I knew I had to come back for the full experience. I didn’t have enough points to qualify for a longer distance, so I spontaneously decided to sign up for a fall 100k race in Mexico. I was able to finish the grueling UTMX with little training in 19h 33m, just 27 min shy of cutoff. After securing enough points and doing some research, I decided to sign up to TDS, the more challenging and less demanded UTMB race. TDS is a 145k race starting in Courmayeur Italy running west around Mount Blank to finish in Chamonix France.

I started working with Brian of Steep Endurance in February and had a solid plan, which included hundreds of miles of treadmill at 15% (which i didn’t run). Training went ok, but was difficult to keep up with a new baby at home and lots of work travel. I did a couple 50m races and a big night run, but was far from hitting the planned weekly mileage/vert. As I entered tapering I was concerned about my fitness level and was overwhelmed with the advertised 28k ft of gain (turns out its much more than that). When I got to Chamonix my fears grew exponentially, but there was no turning back now. The morning of the race I was up at 2 am for a 2:30 am bus pickup. I didn’t get much sleep, but my mind and body felt strong. All my gear was in place including almost 6k calories of Spring energy. I knew that as long as I could eat I would be able to move and finish within the 42 hour cutoff.

The race started and very early I found myself climbing a very steep hill to the sound of hundreds of poles hitting the pavement. I had decided to start in the back of the field and figured I would save legs for later. Later came very soon, first 5 miles had over 1,000ft of gain each! I was so thrilled of being out there and it was so beautiful that I didn’t feel any pain. Morning broke around 6:30 am and what had been expected to be rain, turned into a beautiful chill weather perfect for running. 4 hours in I was at 12miles with 6k ft of climb, so things were looking good. If I could keep that 3m/hr pace, I would be done in 28-30 hours. Perfect. We continued going up and down valleys and the conga line was getting lame. We’re 15m in and I’m literally stopped for 10m as the field moves through a technical downhill. I started getting a bit impatient. The sun came up as we approached Bourg Saint Maurice, the first big aid station where I would meet my wife Ali. This was mile 31, so 1/3 done and came in exactly in 9 hours. The math worked, 27-28 hours total I would be done.

I found Ali and it was all happiness until I realized my battery wasn’t charged and my watch was agonizing. I was carrying my cable charger, but there was so many people it was even hard to move, so forget about finding a power source. I ate a vegan burrito, changed shoes and pushed fwd after the 40min break. I was still feeling strong, it was 1:30pm and only had 10 miles for the next big aid, so went out in good spirits. At this point I had passed about 300 people and was placing 1,200 or so. This next section is the only piece that I was able to recover on my watch and made it to strava: 10.1m with 6.5k feet of gain at 20:32/mi so 3:28 moving time (total time was over 6 hours including a 45min wait for my turn to come down Prasseur Pralongnan). I wasn’t complaining and was able to rest during the down time, but all the waiting was messing up my rhythm and motivation. I finally made it to Cormet de Roseland where Ali had been waiting for 4+ hours. It was getting dark and I started asking whether I should just call it quits. I decided to keep pushing and geared up for the night after some food and coffee. I gave my lamp to Ali and asked her to put in the fresh batteries (I would soon realize I had already changed the batteries, so Ali changed them again for the old ones!)

As I started moving into this big hill and the night came down, I had my first big setback. I decided to sit and rest at the top of the climb, but fell asleep for a few minutes and quickly felt signs of hypothermia. I put my jacket and gloves on quickly and started moving.. was a close call. So without a watch to follow heart rate, or a functional lamp, I started moving very slowly for the next 15 miles into Beaufort. Somewhere in the night I sat again for a couple minutes and as I raised, I broke one of my poles. Just what I needed as I was ready to face some big downhills. My quads were screaming as I moved down 3k ft into Beaufort where we would get our dropbags and rest. This was mile 57 and I came in at 3:20 am (bit past the scheduled 9 pm arrival). Surprisingly I was now placing somewhere around 1,000, not because I was faster, but because at this point over 600 people had dropped from the race. I stayed about 1:30 hours in Beaufort as I figured better to rest than going out in the dark moving so slow. I waited for my friend Claudia and we went out around 5 am after eating and taking care of several blisters. Started climbing into the 100k mark now without poles and was feeling again very strong. Made the 4 miles into Hauteluce relatively fast right into sunrise.

Next was a big climbing section towards Col du Jolly. I ran out of water quickly and was suffering from sleep deprivation. I had about 10m to go on a massive climb and was no having fun. (What is the point of doing this is you are not having fun?) I figured even if I make it to the next aid I will still have 30k to go, so no way I will be able to keep up. I called Ali and asked her to just meet me at Col do Jolly as I may just finish my race there. It would take me 5 hours but I finally made it. As I came into Col du Jolly I was able to charge my phone and it turned out there was no road nearby and would take Ali another hour to get there. Everything happens for a reason. We agreed to meet on the trail to Les Contamines and I was once again reinvigorated after cheese and crackers. I finally ran into Ali, changed again into the Speedgoats and was completely renewed coming down into the last major aid station. It took me 2 hours for 6 miles so was back in the game.

As I came into Contamines it was now 2 pm on day 2 and my mind was fully focused on finishing. I had 10 miles to Les Houches with the last 4K feet of climb. It took me another 5 hours including a stop in a country cafe for a well deserved orangina with my new buddies from Finland. This was also the peak of heat and another very tough section after 30+ hours going at it. We finally made it to the top just to realize water was another 4km. By now I had realized the dif between a regular km and a French km. When you ask people in this area it seems everywhere you go it’s 2km, and this are long kms, more like 5.

As I came down to Les Houches I saw Ali again and was so happy. I could smell the finish line and her support during the last 2 days made me want to push harder. I didn’t even stop at the aid and just ran to the finish as I wanted to come in on daylight. Those 5.5 miles took me 1:07 and I’m sure I logged in 8min miles. Turns out I did leave some gas in the tank, although it was probably because I moved so slow for so long. Coming into Chamonix was magic, so much support, so much energy, it really felt like a big accomplishment although my 40:33:42 put me in 908 place, around 54%.

There are many things I would do different next time, like training for downhills, starting further front on the pack to avoid traffic, or making sure my batteries work! But all in all I wouldn’t change my experience for anything, and more importantly I would do this again a thousand times just to see my family at the next aid station. It was a very special race and I’m grateful to everyone that contributed to this amazing experience. I will be back for another adventure.

SATURDAY: MAYBROOK TRAVERSE

This Saturday, June 1, at 6:30 a.m., meet at the East Fishkill Community Center in Hopewell Junction, athletic field lot, prepared to run a 23 mile unique “trail”—The Maybrook Traverse. We’ll be parking at the finish in Hopewell Junction and taking a minimum number of cars to the start at the Metro North Train Station in Brewster. The run follows the decommissioned train line that once connected Danbury to Beacon. One of the double set of tracks has been removed and is scheduled to be paved in 2020 to connect the Putnam County Trailway to the Dutchess County Trailway as part of the Empire State Trailway system. But before they pave this and ruin it completely, I’d like to get out there and explore. I’ve run the first four miles and while it’s not scenic by any stretch of the imagination, if you’re looking for a long non-techincial run, maybe training for a backyard ultra, this might be the run for you. Conditions vary from some asphalt at the start to a combination of track ballast and exposed dirt. This is a self-supported run so bring plenty of water and food.

After the run, bring a change of clothes and some money and we can head over to Sloop Brewing Company @ The Factory which is a short drive from the finish and rehydrate, maybe ingest some calories for recovery purposes.

Hope to see you out there.

This Sunday, May 26, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Bennett’s Pond on the Ridgefield/Danbury border when we run a classic—the 10 mile Realander Run. Meet at the parking lot on Bennett’s Farm Road (see Google map) prepared to run this clockwise loop which includes some familiar trails and some new ones. Anyone interested in adding some extra miles can arrive at 5:00 a.m. for an 8-mile loop or 7:00 a.m. for an extra 4-mile loop.

Also, if you have a bow tie or two, bring it. I have an idea for the group photo today and I think we should all look sharp.

MONDAY: Lewisboro Town Park

This Monday, May 27, at 7:00 a.m, meet at the Lewisboro Town Park Upper Lot when we run a course that includes some of the newest trails in the Reservation—The Town Park to Covered Bridge Loop. We’ll all start out together and head toward the Meadow and up the FH trail but from there, you’ll have options for different distances. Three of the four options will take you through the covered bridge. The 8.6 mile option takes you to a couple smaller trails that we haven’t been on in a while so pay attention to the turns.

Hope to see you out there this weekend.

Enjoy the pic from the last run from Michigan Road. What an awesome day and for anyone interested in starting early, you won’t need headlamps at 5:00 a.m. for a while.

SUNDAY: MICHIGAN ROAD LOT

On Sunday, May 19, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Michigan Road Lot to run the Michigan to Kimberly Loop. This variation includes distances of 6, 7.5 and 9 miles so if you’re looking for a longer run, you have some options. Want to add more? Arrive at 5:00 a.m. or 7:00 a.m. ready to run an extra 8 mile or 4 mile loop. See the map ››

SATURDAY: MOUNTAIN LAKES PARK

This Saturday, May 18, at 7:00 a.m., meet at the trailhead to Lookout Point in Mountain Lakes Park (201 Hawley Road, North Salem, New York 10560) and get ready to run the 2018 Sarah Bishop course. Relive the great uphill at the start, and the equally awesome uphill at the finish. In between there’s Bailey Mountain and plenty of trail. We might make some improvization on the map so I can’t guarantee we’ll be following this closely. See the map ››

I have some interesting runs planned for the next few weekends. Hope to see you out there.

SUNDAY: TRAILSIDE MUSEUM

This Sunday, May 12, at 8:00 a.m., you should stay home, cook breakfast for your wife, mother, or significant woman in your life, to show just how much you love her and her understanding ways—but if you decide not to, meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Trailside Museum Lot, when we run an old but classic course—Trailside to Tower. This 6-mile course starts with a big wake-up climb to Fox Hill, then hits some of the smaller trails to Raven Rocks before turning north to the Fire Tower and back to start. If you want to start early, arrive at 7:00 a.m. for a four-mile loop. And for all the women in the group, I can’t think of a better way to start your day than with a run!

SATURDAY: MEADOW LOT

On Saturday, May 11, at 7:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Meadow Lot, when we run a new combination of trails—the Meadow Multiloop. For a truly epic adventure, start at 4:00 a.m. and run the outermost, perimeter loop. At 7:00 a.m., we’ll run the 8 mile orange loop. At 9:00 a.m., we’ll start the 6 mile green loop and so on. There are 34 total miles for 50k plus but unless you’re training for a hundred (you know who I’m talking to), you can stick with one or two loops.

Hope to see you out there this weekend.

Great to see this hard-core group out in Zofnass Preserve on a rainy day. Between the roots, the water, and the rocks, this was definitely one of the more technically challenging runs to be sure.

SUNDAY: Zofnass Family Preserve

This Sunday, May 5, at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Zofnass Family Preserve in Pound Ridge (259 Upper Shad Road, see Google Map) when we run everyone’s favorite labyrinthian preserve with a network of trails noted for its crags and rock outcrops. Meet at the main entrance and follow a 6-mile perimeter loop counterclockwise making all right turns except for exiting the park, and excluding the orange, western loop. See the map page here. Those looking to start early can arrive at 7:00 a.m. which should give us enough time to run the Southern and Central Roundabout loops. Note: park on the north side of Upper Shad Road. If you park on the south side, you may be ticketed.

SATURDAY: Bear Mountain / Meadow Lot

This Saturday is the North Face Endurance Challenge at Bear Mountain. Distances on Saturday include marathon, 50k, and 50 mile while shorter distances are on Sunday. A lot of runners in the group will be out either running or supporting and if you can fit it into your schedule, come to the finish or cheer everyone on as they pass through the Anthony Wayne aid station. We’ll have a tent near the finish so plan to hang out after the run and wait for the last of the finishers to cross the line.

For those of you looking to get a run in closer to home, meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Meadow lot at 7:00 a.m. to run the Fire Tower Summit Course. Before there was Raven Rocks Run and the addition of more trails in the Rez, there was this course. Its six miles of fun and includes climbs to Fox Hill and the Fire Tower Summit. If you miss it, don’t worry, I’ll be reviving this route in a few weeks on a Sunday.

Hope to see you out there this weekend.

April 28, Leatherman’s Loop

On Sunday, April 28, at 9:00 a.m., we’ll be running the 33rd annual Leatherman’s Loop. Whether you’re signed up for the race or just want to watch or help out, come out early for a morning of fun. More info at LeathermansLoop.org.

On Saturday, April 27, at 7:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Meadow lot, when we run the Meadow to Overlook course. We’ll be taking this 6 mile course easy, saving up for the race. The return leg of this course will pass by the visitor center where you can pick up your race shirt and bib starting at 9:00 a.m. Lee-Stuart Evans will be on hand and you can ask him all about his recent FKT Leatherman’s 350 mile loop adventure. Later in the day you can take a hike with him to the Leatherman’s Cave in the Rez (time to be determined Saturday morning).

I hope to see you out there this weekend and have a great race.

SUNDAY: MEADOW LOT

On Sunday, April 21, at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Meadow Parking lot when we run a course that combines some serious hills with some wide-open trails to stretch your legs. The Meadow, Museum, Fire Tower to Michigan run is 6 miles of awesome that will give you a combination of steep slopes and gentle hills (pretty much in that order). There are some unexpected turns on this course so you’ll want to keep a map handy so you’re sure to stay on-course. This is the final training run before the Loop and a great course to check out the trails before race day. For those who want to get an early start on the day, arrive at 5:00 a.m. for an 8-mile loop or 7:00 a.m. for an additional 4.

SATURDAY: MICHIGAN ROAD

This Saturday, April 20, at 7:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Michigan Road Lot, when we do a little exploring. There’s a small preserve south of the Reservation—the Clark Preserve—and we’re going to find it. This is going to involve finding a BRLA trail that might not exist and just a hint of a rumor of what might be a trail into the preserve itself. What could possibly go wrong?

Hope to see you out there this weekend,

SUNDAY

On Sunday, April 14, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Michigan Road lot, when we run the second of our Subway Series. We’ll be using the “Subway” map of the Rez this time and you’re going to have to figure out what route to take. Just head to Raven Rocks, Kimberly Bridge, and the Meadow Lot, what could be easier, right? Early risers can start at 5:00, 6:00, and 7:00 for some Red Trail repeats.

SATURDAY

On Saturday, April 13, at 6:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Michigan Road lot, ready to run long. I’m considering following in Paul Fost’s footsteps and heading to Hunt Parker Preserves in an out-and-back combination of roads and trails. Should be about 20 miles total but you can turn back at any point.

For those looking for something shorter, arrive at Michigan Road at 7:00 and try the Rock Trail Loop.

Hope to see you out there this weekend.

SATURDAY

On Saturday, April 6, starting at 6:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Michigan Road lot when we run the Red Trail Loop. First loop will be counterclockwise and we’ll alternate direction after that. I’m in for two but you can continue as long as you’d like.

Those looking for a long run can also consider Springletrack, an awesome 30 mile course from High Falls to Ellenville through  the Shawangunk Range (“The Gunks”). I won’t be able to make this but I can highly recommend it. Learn more ››

SATURDAY

On Saturday, March 23, at 7:00 a.m., meet at Lewisboro Town Park Upper Lot ready to run the perimeter loop. This time, let’s run this in a counterclockwise loop, getting to the overlook first, then the stairs, then Raven Rocks. If you’re not up for the entire 12 mile run, turn back at any point for a shorter distance. Those who want to start at 6:00 a.m. can run down the Pine Forest, through the meadow field, then back up Howland Drive in about an hour. SUNDAY

The bridge at intersection 2 is out so continue on the Brown trail and cross at intersection 1. The snow has been receding and I’m hopeful that most will be gone by Sunday so all you’ll have to deal with is mud, maybe some hills—the usual stuff. SUNDAY

This Sunday, March 10, at 8:00 a.m., we’re going to once again meet at Reservoir Road behind the Katonah Art Museum. With a new round of snow Saturday night and rain Sunday morning, it’s not going to be a great day on the trails. So, instead, we’ll run from Reservoir Road to Armstrong Preserve and, depending on trail conditions, may make a loop inside the park. Total distance is 10.5 miles but turn around whenever you want to shorten the distance to your liking. We’ll head out on Red/Green and see how far we can get through Richard’s preserve and Armstrong. If the trails are in bad shape, we’ll keep to the larger trails instead. On Sunday, March 3, at 8:00 a.m., we’re going to take a break from our usual trails that have been icy over the past weeks and run something different. If trail conditions are good, we’ll run across the dam, over to Hunt/Parker Preserves, and make a loop of that course before returning. Total distance is around 7 miles half on dirt road and half on trail. If the trails are in poor shape, we will stay on the roads and run to the end of Upper Hook Road for a total of 9 miles. SUNDAY

On Sunday, February 17, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Michigan Road Lot ready to run the Michigan to Kimberly Loop Course. The main course is a 6 mile loop that will take you over Fox Hill, DH, and up Blue. Needless to say, there are hills involved. Overachievers can turn this into a 7.5 or 9 mile run instead. As usual, early birds can start at 5:00 for 8 miles and 7:00 for an additional 4.
