April 30, Michigan Road

On Sunday, April 30, at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Michigan Road lot when we follow the Michigan to Kimberly Bridge course. Michigan Road is our traditional starting point for runs in the southern portion of the reservation but this time we’ll run North from the lot to the Meadow, follow some of the Leatherman’s Loop course trail to Kimberly Bridge, then “up” the blue trail and return by way of yellow. There are some hills on this course particularly around mile 4. You have been warned. Anyone interested in getting a few more miles in can arrive at 5:00 a.m., 6:00 a.m. or 7:00 a.m. for an early start. Trail Map here ››

On Saturday, April 29, join us for one last training run at Bear Mountain before the North Face Endurance Challenge in two weeks. Options include distances of 50k, 26 miles, 22 miles, and the 13 mile half marathon course. There are PDF, GPX, and KML files of the courses available here and you should bring a map just in case. Three options to meet that day: 6:00 a.m. Woodsbridge Lot, Katonah; 6:40 a.m., Anthony Wayne; 7:00 a.m. Ice Rink Lot. Complete details in the calendar.

Also on Saturday, April 29, at 6:00 a.m., join Peeter Muursepp at the Lewisboro Town Park for around 12 miles. I’ll leave the details of the course to him though.

On Friday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m., join us at lean-to 5 (Michigan Road) for a night run. Course to be determined but will be around 6 miles. Bring a headlamp and some of your favorite “recovery” food and drink and we’ll hang out by the fire afterwards.

Great job last week at the Leatherman’s Loop. Nice to see so many of you take the podium and win a pie and even nicer still to just hang out after the race. Next race in the Trail Mix Series is A Mild Sprain on Sunday, May 21. Hope to see you there.

April 23, Leatherman’s Loop

On Sunday, April 23, we’ll be meeting at the Meadow lot for the 31st annual Leatherman’s Loop. For complete instructions, visit LeathermansLoop.org. Good luck all, I hope to see you all there.

On Saturday, April 22, at 7:00 a.m., meet at the Lewisboro Town Park when we run the 12 or 15 mile Reservation Perimeter Loop. The course takes us on all perimeter trails and the 15 mile version adds a climb over the Fire Tower. If you’re training for the North Face Endurance Challenge, this is a great opportunity to get a run in while saving a little for the Loop.

On Saturday, April 22, at 6:00 a.m., meet at the north end of the Anthony Wayne lot at Bear Mountain for a 13 to 15 mile loop. Kevin Rader will lead the group, which is good since he knows those trails better than I do. If you want to car pool from the Woodsbridge Lot in Katonah, plan to leave there at 5:15 a.m.

Do you like saving money? If you reach out to Warren Young, account rep at Backcountry.com, at (810) 204-4663 or wyoung@backcountry, and tell him you’re with the Leatherman Harriers Sunday Runs group, he’ll set you up with a 15{accc40b09832ee94a70b9d38053be2da501a998c4b43b97565b1c370fb270371} discount when you buy from the store. I don’t typically make endorsements but I’ve had good experience buying from them and you guys might want to give them a try.

And one last note, you’ve probably heard that this year’s tick population is going to be high. I know several runners have pulled ticks off themselves recently so want to remind everyone to check yourselves over carefully after a run even if you’ve stayed in the middle of the trail. Use a repellent—ones with deet are more effective—and if you see something suspicious on another runner, let them know. Lyme disease and other tickborne illnesses can be serious.

Now, enjoy the photo from this past Sunday I hope to see you this weekend.

This Sunday, April 16, at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Meadow Parking lot when we run a course that combines some serious hills with some wide-open trails to stretch your legs. The Meadow, Museum, Fire Tower, to Michigan run is 6 miles of awesome that will give you a combination of steep slopes and gentle hills (pretty much in that order). There are some unexpected turns on this course so you’ll want to keep a map handy so you’re sure to stay on-course. It’s easy to take a wrong turn, just sayin’. For those who want to get an early start on the day, arrive at 7:00 a.m. or 6:00 a.m. for even more miles.

On Saturday, April 15, at 6:00 a.m., meet at the Bennett’s Pond parking lot on Bennett’s Farm Road and run the point-to-point Ives Trail—an approximately 20 mile course with an elevation gain of 2,500 feet that stretches from Ridgefield through Danbury to Redding. I’m still working on the logistics so if you’re interested, please email me. See the map here ››

Meanwhile, enjoy last week’s picture. Kudos to Todd Henrich for tying the blue hill repeat record of 17 reps on Sunday. He’s not in the picture only because he was well on his way already. And an extra shout out to Joseph Cloidt who, when given a challenge, will not be outdone. On Monday, he successfully completed 23 repeats of Blue and is, unquestionably, now the king of the hill. It’s on Strava so it must be true.

On Saturday, April 8, at 7:45 a.m., meet at the Ice Skating Parking Lot at Bear Mountain and run part of the North Face Endurance Challenge course. Options include the half-marathon loop to Anthony Wayne, the full marathon course, and even the 50k course if you’re up for it. I’m considering a 16 mile loop that starts and ends like the NFEC races (KML file here). Those leaving from Katonah can meet at the Woods Bridge Lot promptly at 7:00 a.m.

This Sunday, April 2, at 8:00 a.m., meet at the gazebo at Leonard Park in Mt. Kisco (see map) when we tackle some different trails. We’ll start in Leonard park, go through Marsh Sanctuary, Merestead, Butler, and Westmoreland Sanctuary. Runners will have a choice of various distances. Anyone interested in starting early can arrive at 7:00 a.m. for a few extra miles. No earlier starts this week.

5 Mile Run: Take the course through Marsh and Merestead to the Butler loop.
7.7 Mile Run: Follow the Butler loop which adds 2.7 to the run for a total of 7.7 miles.
10 Mile Run: Cross the road to Westmoreland Sanctuary for a short loop.
13.1 Mile Run (approx): Anyone interested in going farther can try the Leonard Park to Westmoreland Greenbelt Half Marathon which adds the perimeter course of Westmoreland. And if you know how to get to the Meyer Preserve, you can make this run even more epic.

On Saturday, April 1, at 8:00 a.m., if you missed the Dancing Rock run or you just can’t get enough, meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Michigan Road lot for a special run on a classic course designed by Tony—The Dancing Rock Run. This is a looped course of 7.5-miles including some significant bushwhacks. The course isn’t flagged, so you might want a map. Just sayin’. Early birds can start at 7:00 a.m. for a warmup before the run.

Some great running this past weekend. Seems everyone found a path through the park. Kudos to Charlotte Dequeker on Saturday for killing it on the Blueathon—17 repeats for over 22 miles and 7,000 feet of gain. You are now king of the hill.

March 26, Trailside Museum

On Sunday, March 26, at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Trailside Museum for something different. Seems a number of you have a difficult time following the courses on the maps I make so this week, no course. Instead, take whatever trails you want but get to (in order) Dancing Rock, Raven Rocks, and the Fire Tower. How you get there is up to you—trail, bushwhack, hills, no hills—totally your call. I’ve posted a map of the park to help you out but that’s all. If you want to start early, arrive at 7:00 a.m. If that’s not early enough for you, show up at 6:00 a.m. with headlamp. Jeff said he wants to start at 5:00 a.m. so there’s that. Warm weather and rain on Saturday will mean wet conditions but hopefully the snow will melt by Sunday.

On Saturday, March 25, at 7:00 a.m., how many hill repeats on Blue can you do? Joe Mo holds the current record with 15 and wants to add (significantly) to that to make a 50k. I calculate that’s 25 repeats but your mileage may vary. Meet at Kimberly Bridge and see how many you can do and try to become King of the Mountain! Start time at 7:00 a.m. but join in whenever you get there.

**UPDATE** Charlotte Dequeker successfully completed 17 reps of the blue hill on Saturday. Joe Mo was the only other person still on the trail when I left and I’m waiting on his final result but thanks everyone for coming out. Charlotte’s Strava activity is available here ››. Well done.

Hope to see you out there this weekend.

With our usual trails blanketed in snow, we’re going to switch things up this week with the option of some distance work on a more forgiving surface. On Sunday, March 19, at 8:00 a.m., meet on Reservoir Road in Katonah (behind the Katonah Art Museum, see Google map) and run 4.5, 6.5, or 9.0 mile out-and-back course to Maple Ave, Jay Street and Upper Hook Road. Your choice of distances but the turnaround at 121 yields a total of 9 miles. Early birds can start at 7:00 a.m. Let me know if anyone plans to start earlier than that. Hopefully we’ll be back on the trails again soon.

UPDATE: OK, I have a couple people that want to start at 5:00 a.m. on Sunday. If you’re up for the dawn patrol, I’ll see you then. Bring a headlamp, though. It’s gonna be dark.

This Sunday, March 12, at 8:00 a.m, meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Trailside Museum when we run the Trailside, CB, to Blue route. This 7-mile course starts with a bit of an uphill (that’s being kind) but once you head down the CB trail within the first mile, you can catch your breath and enjoy yourself. There might be another hill or two along the way but nothing to worry about. The course follows a new trail that has been marked with temporary flags starting in the woods behind the Michigan Road residence and ending at the Old Mill. By the time you reach the blue trail, you’ll remember what makes that one of our favorites in the park. If you’re not feeling the love of the full distance, you can cut a couple miles from the run. See the map here ››

If you’re looking for an early start, arrive at 7:00 a.m. for a pre-run loop. Early birds can start at 6:00 a.m. but bring a headlamp and set your clock ahead.

On Saturday, March 11, 5:00 a.m., come out to the Michigan Road Lot to run a 5-mile loop course on the Red trail. Run as many as you’d like up to six for a distance of 50K. Keep a drop bag in your car, bring hot coffee, pancakes, whatever you need. If you don’t want to start at 5:00, since each loop will take about an hour (the red course is one of the faster trails), start at 6:00, 7:00 or 8:00 instead. If you’re training for the North Face Endurance Challenge, this is a great opportunity to get some miles in.

March 5, Michigan Road

On Sunday, March 5, at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Michigan Road lot for a special run on a classic course designed by Tony—The Dancing Rock Run. This is a looped course of 7.5-miles with your choice of one or two loops. There are few who remember this race but, fortunately for us, Tony does and he is sharing the course with us on Sunday so you won’t want to miss this run. Early birds can start at 7:00 a.m.; insomniacs at 6:00 a.m.

Looking for mileage? Come to the Ward Pound Ridge Meadow Lot on Saturday, March 4, at 6:00 a.m. We’ll start with a warm-up loop and then, at 7:00 a.m., we’ll begin a 12-mile perimeter loop of the Rez. Those looking for a 6.5-mile run can eliminate the Hemlock Hills loop. This Sunday, February 19, at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation when we run a classic course—The Red/Rock Loop.  The snow on the southern trails is well compacted and relatively stable so the running there is as good as it gets this time of year. I haven’t been on the Rock Trail but the Red/Green and Red trails are fine. You might want to hold off and save the Rock Trail portion for another, warmer day. Your call. Early birds can start at 7:00 a.m. Insomniacs at 6:00 a.m. but bring headlamps. It’s still dark then.

On Sunday, December 4, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Michigan Road lot and run some of the southern trails on the Michigan Red/Rock loop. We’ll start at Michigan Road and take some of the wider paths to the Rock Trail where the course narrows and the hills begin. We’ll go up the stairs to Spy Rock then up more to the overlook before returning to Michigan Road on a nice downhill finish. Lots of hills on this great run and some options to shorten or lengthen the run as well. Those looking to do some extra miles can arrive at 7:00 a.m. for a 4 mile loop.

Hope to see you out there this Sunday.

November 27, Lewisboro Town Park

This Sunday, November 27, at 8:00 a.m, meet at the Lewisboro Town Park upper parking lot (see map) when we shed some pounds and run a perennial favorite—the Fat Ass Run. Seven miles of trail running is the perfect antidote to the tryptophan-laden butterball from Thanksgiving dinner and this year I’ve added an even longer 8.5 mile option. The fresh air will wake you up, you’ll feel reinvigorated, plus, as an added bonus, you’ll work up an appetite to help you finish those leftovers still cluttering up your fridge. For those who don’t want to do the longer distances, a three-mile course is also an option. Now there’s no excuse not to come out. Anyone interested in getting an early start can arrive by 7:00 a.m. and get a few miles in before the run. See map page ››

Join us on Friday, November 25, at 8:30 a.m. for the perfect post-Thanksgiving run at Mianus River Gorge in Bedford, NY. This 4.4 mile out-and-back course traverses the beautiful Mianus River Gorge located on the Bedford/Greenwich border. The course is primarily single-track overlooking the gorge. From the main entrance, start on the red trail and take all of the lefts even to the quarry, overlook, and falls to add a little more interest and distance. For a change of pace, this is a beautiful and often overlooked park. See the map here ››  |  Get directions in Google Maps ››

And if that isn’t enough, on Saturday, November 26, at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Meadow lot for a new course—Pound Ridge Perimeter loop. This offers runners a 12.5 mile course of mixed terrain on the the trails that border the park with an option of a climb over the fire tower for even more fun.

This Sunday, November 20, at 8:00 a.m., meet at the gazebo at Leonard Park in Mt.

There you have it— a host of great options through five different parks. Hope to see you out there.

This Sunday, July 10, at 8:00 a.m., meet at the trailhead to Lookout Point in Mountain Lakes Park (201 Hawley Road, North, Salem, NY) when we run the 6 mile(ish) perimeter loop. Start up the path to Lookout Point and follow the course over Bailey Mountain and the OS trail. Add an optional 1-mile loop at Hunt Lane and/or 2 miles for the Herst-Mead and Halmi Preserves for up to 9 fun miles. If you’re planning on running the Sarah Bishop Bushwhack this fall, this is a great chance to check out some of the trails. Anyone interested in getting an early start can arrive at 7:00 a.m. to get a few miles in and those looking to run longer can add some miles after. See the map here ››

On Saturday, July 9, at 8:00 a.m., it looks like there’s a good chance of rain so I suggest meet at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Meadow lot and run Eleanor’s Escape. This is a great course that includes a mix of wide trails, single track, long level paths, and technical uphills. Plenty of options for distance too but bring your own maps, I’m not going to make this one.

Hope to see you out there this weekend.

On Sunday, July 3, at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Teatown Lake Reservation, , and run an out-and-back course on the Teatown Kitchawan Trail. The course consists of relatively easy trails, a dirt road, and a small stretch of pavement. The full course is 13.2 miles round trip but you can turn back at any point for a shorter run. We’ll start at the Teatown Lake Reservation which has a nature center open at 9:00 a.m. After the run, you can bring something drink or something to eat and hang out for a while. If you’d like to get a few miles in early, arrive at 7:00 a.m. See map ››

On Saturday, July 2, at 7:00 a.m., anyone interested in running the Escarpment Trail, meet at the Katonah Woods Bridge Lot and we’ll car pool to the start. I’m sorting out final plans so please see this page with instructions and this list of interested runners and email me if you aren’t on the list and plan to run.

On Monday, July 4, at 8:00 a.m., we’re going to meet at the Leon Levy Preserve in South Salem. The parking lot entrance is on Route 123 about half a mile south of Route 35. At 383 acres, this preserve is relatively small so bring a map and explore what the preserve has to offer. I have a 5.5 mile course that I usually follow but you’re free to make up your own.

There you have it. Three days, three locations, three runs. Hope to see you out there this weekend.

On Sunday, June 26, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Trailside Museum for the Trailside to Overlook Run. You’ll have distances of 7.7, 6.3, or 5 miles but, as always, your mileage may vary. If you’re looking for even more miles, there are plenty of options for that as well. Looking to start a little early? Arrive at 7:00 a.m. for a warm-up. See the map here ››

On Saturday, June 25, at 7:00 a.m., I’m turning the point-to-point Ives Trail into an up to 30-mile, 4,400 feet gain, out-and-back. Meet at the Bennett’s Pond parking lot on Bennett’s Farm Road at 7:00 a.m. If you’re not up for the full 30 miles, no worries. Come out and run whatever distance you want as an out-and back course. See the map here ››

I’m putting together a run of the Escarpment trail on Saturday, July 2. Options of different distances up to 18 miles all on very technical trails in the Catskills. More information is here ›› and let me know if you’re interested.

Hope to see you out there this weekend.

This Sunday, June 19, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Westmoreland Sanctuary on Chestnut Ridge Road in Mount Kisco when we run the 5.25 mile perimeter loop. This time, we run the course in a counterclockwise direction and return to the main lot. Those who want an extra challenge can do the Butler loop across the street after the run. That will add another 3+ miles at least for a total of around 8.5. Those looking to start early can arrive at 7:00 a.m.

On Saturday, June 18, if you like hills, join me at the Ward Pound Ridge Kimberly Bridge lot for hill repeats up the blue trail. I’ll be running the “front” of the blue trail, elevation gain 400 feet, out-and-back distance 1.2 miles, starting at 6:00 a.m. and continuing for a while. You can join me or just meet there at 8:00 a.m. and run the Kimberly Bridge 6/9.5 loop.

I’m putting together a run of the Escarpment trail on Saturday, July 2. Options of different distances up to 18 miles all on very technical trails in the Catskills. More information is here ›› and let me know if you’re interested.

June 12, Michigan Road Lot

This Sunday, June 12, at 8:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Michigan Road Lot when we run the Michigan Road Gerrython. Gerry Sullivan has lent his considerable expertise in creating a 13-mile loop that includes some of the toughest trails in the Reservation. You have options for multiple distances from 5 to 13 miles (see map) so pick a distance, pick a color, and stay on course. Those looking to start early can arrive at 7:00 a.m. for a 4-mile warmup loop.

On Saturday, June 11, if you’re looking for a race, there’s the Huntington State Park Challenge in Redding, CT, with distances ranging from 5k to 20k. If you don’t want to race, I recommend meeting at the trail head to lookout point at Mountain Lakes Park and running the MLP 15K course, making the run as long or as short as you want it. We’ll be back here in a few weeks so this is a great opportunity to check out the trails.

I’m putting together a run of the Escarpment trail on Saturday, July 2. Options of different distances up to 18 miles all on very technical trails in the Catskills. More information is here ›› and let me know if you’re interested.

Hope to see you out there this weekend.

Thanks for coming out for the run last weekend although I honestly didn’t know it was “wear your Mild Sprain shirt” day.

June 5, Zofnass Family Preserve

This Sunday, June 5, at 8:00 a.m., meet at the Zofnass Family Preserve in Pound Ridge (259 Upper Shad Road, see Google Map) when we run everyone’s favorite labyrinthian preserve with a network of trails noted for its crags and rock outcrops. Meet at the main entrance and follow a 6-mile perimeter loop making all right turns except for exiting the park, and excluding the orange, western loop. See the map page here. Those looking to start early can arrive at 7:00 a.m. which should give us enough time to run the Southern and Central Roundabout loops.

Anyone looking to run Saturday, June 4, at 8:00 a.m., I recommend starting from the Michigan Road lot and running one of the Gerrython courses—up to 13 miles of awesome. There are also a couple of races this Saturday as well—Rockwood Ramble 10k and Phoenicia Ridge Half Marathon—so you have plenty of activities to choose from.

Hope to see you out there this weekend.
