Dancing Rock Run

Thank you all for coming out and running the Dancing Rock Run this past Sunday. This end-of-the-year event is a special one and revives a race that was started in the early days of the Leatherman’s Loop. It was great to see two of the founders of the race out on the trails yesterday—Tony and Judy Godino—enjoying the day at a much easier pace that the rest of you.

Kudos to Chris Irwin who completed two loops of the classic course—forward and backward in the tradition of the original race. Also a shout out to Jacob Benesch who completed a perimeter loop (and then some) and a loop of the course. Ed Dee, Doug Petkanics, and Joe Cloidt completed perimeter loops at 5:00 with Greg Boland just behind in distance.

As is the tradition of the 50k, no one completed the entire distance. Most everyone else finished one loop of the Dancing Rock Classic course though the times were slower than usual. Considering the amount of snow, I’m just glad you all had the perseverance and sense of humor to finish with smiles on your faces. Maybe next year we’ll have better weather, a fire pit, an aid station with coffee, bagels, and bacon, and a finisher of the 50k. We can only hope.

Until then, as this crazy year winds down, I’d like to thank all of you for coming out and running with the group whenever you can, in all kinds of conditions, at whatever distance and pace you want. Running with you has made this year more positive and hopeful than I could have imagined and I’m looking forward to sharing many more miles of trails with all of you next year and in the years to come.

Happy trails all,

Lee Willett

New York has updated its Covid-19 restrictions

Gatherings, indoors or out, are limited to no more than 25 people. As such, plan to stagger start times before and after 8:00 to maintain smaller groups and greater distance. I will not be taking a group photo at this time.

Please remain socially distanced on the run and in the lots and wear a buff or mask when in proximity to others on or off the trail.

    • Maintain social distancing before, during, and after the run. Limit groups to 10.
    • Run abreast where possible to keep out of each other’s slipstreams
    • Stagger start times, courses, and directions to maintain smaller groups
    • Wear masks or buffs/neck gaiters when in the parking lots and when you see others on the trail even if they don’t do the same.

Hope to see you out there this weekend.

On Saturday, December 19, at 7:00 a.m., meet at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Michigan Road Lot for one last course check of the Dancing Rock Run. Break out your winter running gear for this first-of-the-season run through about a foot of snow. We'll be breaking trail and hunting for the flags we planted last week so this is going to be slow going fo sure. When we're done, we'll have blazed a trail for the Dancing Rock Classic 12k course (but not the 50k perimeter course—you folks are on your own on Sunday). Hope to see you there.

    Dancing Rock 12K/50k

    December 20, 2020 @ 5:00 am - 5:00 pm
Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Michigan Road Lot
    Michigan Road
Pound Ridge, NY 10576 United States

On Sunday, December 20, at 5:00 a.m., get ready to run a very special course—The Dancing Rock Ultra. This course revives a race created by Tony Godino and Dave Cope around the time the Loop was invented but adds a whole lot more. 50k runners will first complete a perimeter loop, then meet up with the main group at 8:00 for the classic Dancing Rock Run 7.5 miler.

Stage 1: Perimeter Loop Starts Promptly at 5:00 a.m. Arrive a little early to sign in. I'll take names in the lot.
Complete perimeter loop as shown on the map, approximately 12 miles, and return to your vehicle which will serve as your aid station. You do not need to wait for the main group—continue onto stage 2 when you're ready. This year, because of Covid-19 precautions, we will not have a roaring file and aid station at lean-to 5. Everyone is responsible for their own aid at their vehicles.
Stage 2: Start the Dancing Rock 12k course approximately 8:00 a.m.
Run the Classic Dancing Rock 12k Course following all flags and bushwhacks. GPX and KML files for this section are posted to help you navigate. I will drop a book at Dancing Rock on the morning of the run. Runners, tear out the next page in the book as proof you've made it to that point. I'll post a form on the site for you to enter the page number and first three words as proof. Return to your vehicle after the run.
Stage 3: Reverse direction on the Dancing Rock 12k course
Run the Classic Dancing Rock Course in the reverse direction following all flags and bushwhack. Tear a second page from the book at Raven Rocks
Stage 4: Complete the final loop
Complete the final loop of the course heading up FH one last time and returning via Red/Yellow. This is not a race. There are no prizes. The winner only gets bragging rights ad some great memories. Conditions may be snowy though I'll update this post with trail conditions later in the week. NEW! Please preregister for this event prior to noon on Saturday ›› You can view and print the Classic 12k map here ››
